After a week since we heard of the earthquake, i have personally learnt

much from the incident. Allow me to share these with you. Can such

'earthshaking' events also help us on the 'spiritual' path?

The first thing that struck me was how much more moved i was hearing the

devastation in Gujarat. I am not a Gujarati, yet I felt more for the people

there than I felt when I heard of the similar devastation in Turkey, Kobe,

Armenia, El Salvador. No doubt because i identified myself as an Indian and

Gujaratis are Indians. If, however, I am a true spiritual aspirant I should

feel as much for the victims of Turkey as i did for the victims of

Gujarat.Till i do, I have not transcended limitations and attachments and

identifications and Maya. Not that my heart does not go out for the victims

elsewhere, but i did feel the pain more for the victims in Gujarat.

If that accusation had been made, it would have been valid and I am

guilty...

I read a few days ago, how a Korean student in a Tokyo subway station,

jumped to the aid of a drunk Japanese male who had fallen onto the tracks,

just as the oncoming train was coming. Not caring for his own safety the

Korean tried to extricate the drunk male and save him before the train bore

over him. He not only failed in his attempt, but died in the process. The

drunk man, the Korean and another Japanese individual who had also tried to

help died, crushed under the wheels of the train.

The Japanese have a traditional mistrust of foreigners and more so of

Koreans and so when the news of the Korean's sacrific broke, a national

outpouring was witnessed in Japan. Even the Prime Minister attended the

Korean student's funeral. The Korean had forgotten, for that moment,

forgotten the divisions that beset Korea and Japan...
