J A B Van Buitenan - I think it's Chicago press. He includes some

interesting notes on the Gita and as it has no particular 'sect' leaning

it's good as an intro to the Gita. Also the set up of the book means you can

follow the trans along with the Sanskrit. Unfortunately the Sanskrit part is

not in the Dev Nagari script but transliterated.

Another trans I have found helpful is one by S Radhakrishnan who again has

some very useful notes, and I fell sticks quite closely to the meaning of

the original text

You might also be interested in Shri Aurobindo's " Essays on the Gita " , as

well as Vinoba's book (I can't remember the exact title) but it really helps

to bring the Gita into your every day life.

I don't know if there is something from the Ramakrishnan mission, and would

be very grateful if anyone could tell me if there is one and whta it's

called/where I can get it.

Thank you

My teacher, the late Sachindra Majumdar, a former RK swami and disciple of

Shivananda, always recommended the translation and commentary by S.

Radhakrishnan (former Vice President of India) which may or may not be

available these days. He did both the Gita and Upanishads which Harper

published. The commentary, which is good but a bit heavy, tends to relate

to similarities with Christianity.

Majumdar, who was fluent in Sanskrit and Bengali, also did a translation in

the early 90s with commentary related mostly to Ramakrishna and Vivekananda,

" The Bhagavad Gita, a Scripture for the Future. " It was published by Asian

Humanities Press and is out of print but you might be able to find a copy.

Otherwise, as you probably know, there are translations out there suited to

any taste or preference.

Good luck,

Ralph

I personally like the Chidbhavananda translation of the Gita. Swami

Chidbhavananda was also a monk of the RK Order...and i particularly like its

thread and flow.,.when the Gita jumps from one topic to another..
