Guest guest
Dear Kristen, Jay sent on your letter to me about Swami Vivekananda's Raja-Yoga. The information you are looking for is all in Marie Louise Burke's Swami Vivekananda in the West: New Discoveries: The World Teacher (Volumes 3 and 4 of the series). [This 6 volume series was published in Calcutta in the 1980s.] In volumes 3 and 4 she gets into when the classes were given, how they were edited and a general gist of their content. The material was published, by the way, both in England and in the USA. There was quite a squabble over it; Marie Louise gets into all of that in her books. Swami Vivekananda mentions Raja-Yoga quite a bit in his letters, specially during his second visit to the West, when he found that the book had prepared the ground for him considerably. I get the impression that this work had the biggest impact on the West during his lifetime. It was published commercially in the USA right up to 1930, which speaks for its importance. From your address, I gather you are at the University of Manitoba. Marie Louise's books are pretty standard and are to be found in many university libraries. I feel sure you could get a copy of volumes 3 and of this series on an interlibrary loan without much difficulty. With best wishes, Sister Gayatriprana PS: If there is a summary of the conference I would love to see a copy. Where is the conference being held? It is interesting to know that people are getting into Swamiji to this extent Please keep me posted. Gp
