Guest guest
(Copy of this message sent to Stephen Bowler and Sharon Hague of the London Board and various other RE bodies in the UK). On Friday afternoon the Vivekananda Centre candidates sat for the GCSE Hinduism examinations. We are fielding nearly 140 candidates sitting for GCSE and A/S level examinations in the UK. We provide by far the largest number of candidates for these examinations in this country. We draw candidates from London, Leicester, Birmingham and Luton. The age range of the candidates this year is: 8 to 72. We have Gujaratis, Sindhis, Tamil, Panjabi and Bengali candidates they are drawn from various Hindu sectarian movements within the UK. On Wednesday our candidates will sit for the Advanced Supplementary Hinduism examinations. Recently we have received very encouraging response about possiblity of starting similar classes teaching Hinduism in other parts of the world. We have been appraoched by Hindu bodies in British Guyana, Trinidad and Mauritius. We have also had a positive response from some of the Ramakrishna missions about possibility of starting Hinduism classes on the same format in other parts of the world. Swami Shardanandaji from South Africa had taken the relevant papers with him to South Africa. Swami Gautamanadaji mentioned possibility of starting classes in Madras, and Swami Prabuddhanandji in San Francisco has also shown interest in developing this idea. The Porbandar centre has requested the syllabus and details about the course offered by London University. What started as a minor activity by the London Vivekananda Centre is now turning into an attractive template that can be used and extended further by other groups. We hope that these activities in London will act as a catalyst for greater work in this field in other parts of the world. jay Vivekananda Centre London
