Guest guest
Hello Sahdev The Gita is not normally read out at weddings. However, it maybe appropriate to read out the meaning of the vedic mantras that are said when the marriage is solemnised, particularly where the marriage vows are taken. I am not sure which tradition of wedding in India you will follow, but all must have a variation of these mantras. The mantras that I mention below are from the Tamil wedding ceremony. Maybe this is of some use to you. x----x------x In the vedic marriage ceremony, the mangala sutra’s (the string with motifs tied around the bride's neck, equivalent to the ring in the west) significance is mainly symbolic. The important marriage prayers and rituals, without which the marriage is incomplete, are made in two other ceremonies, the Panigrahanam and the Saptapadi. Panigrahanam Holding the five fingers of the bride’s hand in his own, the groom takes the marriage vows. 1. I hold your hand at this auspicious hour with god’s blessings, that we may live together till a ripe old age and beget good progeny 2. We now enter into grihastasrama, to live as husband and wife with the blessings of the gods. 3. We are blessed by the gods with that is needed for happiness in life – health, prosperity and wisdom 4. We are blessed by the gods to have single-minded devotion and loyalty to each other. Saptapadi The bride and the groom take seven steps together, with the groom bending down and leading the bride, holding her feet by the big toe. The mantra associated with each step means as follows: 1. Lord Vishnu blesses the couple with all the basic needs of life. 2. Lord Vishnu blesses the couple with good health 3. Lord Vishnu blesses the couple with the energy and devotion required to perform household duties. 4. Lord Vishnu blesses the couple with enjoyment in life 5. Lord Vishnu blesses the couple with wealth and prosperity 6. Lord Vishnu blesses the couple with happiness in all seasons 7. Lord Vishnu blesses the couple that they may live a life of dharma as enjoined by the scriptures. regards Swami > " Vivekananda Centre " <vivekananda >Ramakrishna ><SRPASSEY, " Self Knowledge List " <selfknow-l, > " list " <Ramakrishna > >[ramakrishna] Fw: wedding passages from the Gita >Tue, 26 Jun 2001 10:37:26 +0100 > > >- ><SRPASSEY ><hindu >Tuesday, June 26, 2001 06:37 >wedding passages from the Gita > > > > We will be having a wedding in our family soon and I am in need of some > > appropriate readings from the Gita on the subject of weddings that can >be > > read during the ceremony. > > Thank you, > > Sahdev Passey > >======= > >I am not sure which verses from the Gita would be suitable >for use at a wedding ceremony. > >I will ask our list members to respond? > >jay >Vivekananda Centre London > > > > _______________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
