Dear Steve,

Yes, the Shanti Ashrama still exists. But it can be visited only once in a

year, i.e., when the Vedanta Society of Northern California holds its

annual pilgrimage to the place. It is remote, difficult to visit and

closed. The Society later found it most inconvenient to use as a retreat,

and bought the 2000acres at Olema, Calif. instead where a Monastery, Men's

Retreat and Women's Retreat have been built. In about 1946 a forest fire

destroyed most of the buildings at Shanti Ashrama and the caretaker had to

leave it; since then no one lives there. Inquire of the V.S.N.C. to find

out about the pilgrimage date.
