To do bad is to go away from our true nature - divinity. All goodness is selflessness, an attempt to become more and more selfless. Therefore, generosity, compassion, kindness, helping and loving others fall under the category of doing good. Here one's heart broadens to think of and for others. Passion, greed, jealousy, lust, anger and sense enjoyment are opposite qualities, that lead to self centered attitude, draw us towards selfishness and therefore categorized as 'bad deeds'. Because these two aspects are relative, and contain scope for infinite improvement (or deterioration!) it is up to the individual to see for himself/herself in which direction he or she wants to proceed. Thus, there is no sin nor sinner, it is but a question of ignorance about our true nature - divinity - that propels one to act according to his or her understanding of oneself. Vedanta opens up the window to understand oneself as one is, divine. Swamiji, The Gita, The Upanishads are the ways or means for this clarity. c s shah http://www.neovedanta.org ----
