Guest guest
I agree with Edith Tipple's assertion of a " deep core of spirituality " in America, but I find it to be more of an " intellectual " spirituality, rather than an " experiential " spirituality - resulting in more emphasis on doctrine, than on personal growth. Therefore, whether you agree or disagree, Dr. Shah's commentary on the disconnect between the teachings of Christ and the American lifestyle is important for us Americans to ponder at this watershed point in our history. This morning, I spoke with a friend of mine who is a 70-year old Pueblo indian from northern New Mexico. Interestingly, he spoke in the same terms as this being an " inevitable tragedy, " due to America's " squandering of all the world's resources for its own materialistic gain. " I would tend to believe this is not an uncommon belief amongst native peoples, whether in the Americas or elsewhere. As a non-Native American, I must admit my first reaction to the tragedy was, " Let's make a parking lot out of Afghanistan! " However, after my morning meditation, my desire for retribution dissipated, and another question surfaced, " Why is America so hated by some? " I feel we need to look into the mirror of our own behavior, first, before we take any action. I believe that mirror will reflect some truth in the sentiments of my Native American friend. Again, my operative question continues to be: Would a diplomatic strategy of dialogue and mutual understanding provide greater protection for our freedoms and security, than a swift and severe military response? It's a very difficult question for Americans to even ask, as if the very question classifies the questioner as a coward or a traitor. However, these are not times for the timid - or the narrow-minded. God Bless Us All, Brad
