Buddhism and Non Vegetarianism

Can anyone enlighten me as to how Buddhism, which is

built upon the foundation of compassion permit the

consumption of non vegetarian food.

 

Not to say that other religions do not recognise the

virtue of compassion!!!

 

However having its origin in the East and in total

contradiction to Jainism which advocates complete

abstinence from non vegetarian food how does Buddhism

permit it ?

 

I am looking for a fairly authoritative view on this.
