Guest guest
Om Shanthi! I see both viewpoints on this list- 1. Understand desires so you can control and conquer them 2. Just " gird your loins " and do your practices! Sometimes we need to reflect, sometimes we need to forget and move forward. Buddha said: " If you are in a house and the house is on fire, Do you need to reflect on how it started? No! Just get out! " This seems to be Swamiji's approach also. But then look at Patanjali's Yoga Sutras and you see a very scientific analysis of the mind, how it works, and a detailed description of the obstacles you face. You often need to know your enemy if you want to successfully defeat them in battle. The mind can be your enemy or friend, depending on which obstacles you are facing at any given moment. It's all your approach. Swamiji loved the Yoga Sutras too. Some might say " Hari Om! From this day forward I will just chant the Lord's name and surrender to His will, come what may! " That's for a Bhakta. The Jnani might say " There seems to be this suffering and dissatisfaction that won't leave my mind no matter how much I chant. Maybe I need to analyze it- where it's located, it's cause and symptoms. Then maybe I can find a cure. " The Karmi will say " I'm just offering all my actions to God. If any good comes out it, fine. If not, that's fine too. It's all Your will. I'm just Your instrument.... What can I do on my own anyway? " All these approaches are valid and necessary. One moment you might be a Bhakta, the next a Jnani or Karmi. The mind is very complicated so you need more than one way to " skin a cat. " Use whatever tools are necessary to free the mind, then you'll say " Here's the crutch that helped me to walk. Now I don't need it anymore. " Peace- RD --- sunderh wrote: > Namaste, > > One whole section of the book " Teachings of > Sri Ramakrishna " > has the title : 'Conquest of Desires'. > > Every religion deals with this subject in > depth.
