I recently took two young girls, Kiran and Komal into my class. I am fascinated with their culture which seems to be such a important part of their lives. I would like to know more about it, in particular the celebrations that seems to take place regularly in thir lives. Today they brought me food as a special gift for some inportant festival. I want to understand why they brought it. Can you enlighten me. Today is 14th November, 2001. Thankyou in advance. Susie Newman ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~our response~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Susie Enjoy the food! Today 14th of November is celebrated by Hindus as the festival of 'Diwali'. HAPPY DIWALI. The day is auspicious as on this day one of the most revered personalities of the Hindu tradition - Rama, returned from exile. The people of his kingdom celebrated the evening by lighting lots of little lamps. (the word Diwali is derived from words for row of lamps) For more information on Diwali and information about Hinduism in general please visit our Hinduism for Schools site at http://www.hinduism.fsnet.co.uk jay Vivekananda Centre London http://www.vivekananda.co.uk
