Guest guest
Namaste, Subject title should be changed to 'Euthanasia and Hindu Belief'. The following references will give a broad picture. http://www.himalayanacademy.com/books/pamphlets/KarmaReincarnation.htm l http://www.bme.jhu.edu/~pkgupta/Paula/hindu.abortion.euthanasia.doc http://it.stlawu.edu/~mmac/ncpp/99-2000/hindu_temple_ottawa/euthanasia ..html Hinduism, I think, will deal with the issue on a 'case-by-case' basis, rather than an abstract concept to be applied as a general rule of 'do's and don't-s'. The Taittiriya upanishad [1:11:4]has a passage where the Teacher exhorts the graduating students: " Then, if there is in you any doubt regarding any deeds, any doubt regarding conduct, you should behave yourself in such matters, as the Brahmanas there who are competent to judge, devoted to good deeds, not led by others, not harsh, lovers of virtue would behave in such cases. " [tr. S. Radhakrishnan]. Guest guest
Dear Sathye; It has been a while. Your question is very important to me since I am an Oncologist( cancer doctor) and this is a hot issue. I used to be all in favor for it, if we could properly control it. However lately I have made a 180 degree turn for many reasons, which are, that it has a great potential for abuse and you can talk about it for hrs. But the main reason is that I think " the pain and suffering can not be meaningless " . Pain has to serve some purpose if not for the patient himself then for some body else. We have to believe in the hidden meaning and have to find it. It may be different for different people. By committing Euthanasia we are saying pain has no purpose in our lives to which I disagree. Viktor Frankle's book " Man's search for meaning " is a good book to read.
