Guest guest
Reply to Message 7 in Digest 971 Dear Sreedhar, In the Vedanta movement of Sri Ramakrishna, Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda, celibacy means continence: the preservation and redirecting of all the sexual forces of the body. It is said that if this is carried out for twelve years, one attains to God-realization. If individuals seem to attain a realization in spite of living a non-continent life, I would be inclined to say that those realizations may be " glimpses " , or temporary states of consciousness, not permanent establishment in Self-Realization. All the greatest sages and saints (Ramana Maharshi, Gandhi, the Christian mystics, etc.) have declared the necessity for a total re-alignment of the forces of the body and mind which usually express themselves through the lower centers.
