Guest guest
Hello Brad: Greetings: i was re-reading your message posted several days back and it has taken me a while to digest and come up with some thoughts/questions for my own clarification...forgive the delayed response...but i hope it is ok to do so... Does Psalm 46:10 say then, by being " still " ...we attain to calmness by eliminating tendencies of the mind to wander, and nurture desire..(i seem to be obsessed with that word...but i am not ..it just keeps cropping up !) Secondly, i read the cessation of thought (being the definition of samadhi) to mean having transcended time and space. In time and space alone can you have thought, as thoughts have a beginning and an end. Anything with a beginning and an end must be enmeshed in Time. Anything in Time is in Space, and this flows directly into the relationship of Distance and Speed. In the Geetha it specifically states...anything with a beginning and an end...try and avoid! Having said that, your statement that absolute zero as being infinity (and therefore transcending time and space) MAY not be quite correct. (just my opinion, and i could be wrong.. i am searching for answers as well...)Absolute anything especially absolute numbers are a relative concept,...just as absolute zero is . The concept of Zero exists because of the existence of numbers...and so stay with in the relative world...which is not in Infinity. The only technology that will ever be available to attain to Samadhi is Jnana Yoga and Bhakti Yoga as they seek to still and transcend! This leads naturally, for me, as to why the Buddha always seemed to maintain Silence when asked as to the existence of a GOD...for stating that there was One such as He, will also mean that a One such as the Devil exists... Just a thought i wished to share... Also the Concept of Infinity for me would direct me to look at the ONE source of material or energy or whatever you may want to call it as being not only PRESENT in EVERYTHING but also remains CHANGELESS. That the Sages of yore identified in the Upanishads as Brahman, transcending all relative attributes, the source of ALL. >Greetings: >Several months back, I sent an inquiry into www.allexperts.com , asking: " Is >there anything in our physical universe that is absolutely still? " The >response from a secular scientist was: " Absolute zero (approximately -273 >degrees Celsius) represents absolute cessation of motion and we have not >yet been able to attain it. The figure was deduced backward from >temperature to motion equations. As a quantum theorist, I look at absolute >zero as an infinity because the absolute cessation of movement produces no >time or energy. " My interest in this question is based on one definition of Samadhi as being the absolute cessation of thought (i.e., stillness - For Christians on the List: " Be still, and know that I am God. . . " Psalm 46:10). My broader interest is: How close can scientific inquiry bring us to God? I believe God is the ultimate Scientist, so will the study of creation through the scientific method ulitmately lead us to our Creator? Is there a mathmatical formula, theoretical insight or a technology that, someday, will bring us Realization? (If so, would that be consdiered a form of Jnana Yoga?) Or, will all avenues of scientific inquiry ultimately lead us to infinity - a chasm that logic will never cross? In either case, will scientists someday be the " Rishis " of the Kali Yuga - after all Sadhakas and Sadhus have achieved Moksha? > _______________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
