This is important as the vibrations that are generated are specific for that Deity and it is only then that the Deity manifests....i would strongly recommend the book by Swami Sivananda...it is available online. i am not qualified to answer the latter half of your question, but there are a number of Ramakrishna Order Swamis that are on this List or Swamis all over the world that you can ask that directly.
