[Sri Ramakrishna] Tolerance on both sides? (Was RE: Darkness of Hinduism)

Greetings:

I hope that the group won't mind this first posting... but I, like many

Westerners, came to Hinduism in general, and Sri Ramakrishna in particular,

in a search for a religion of tolerance and inclusiveness. I realize that

it's 2002, and the religious right rears its many heads of intolerance in

every faith. But I would like to believe that those with the blessings of

exposure to Sri Ramakrishna's teaching could look beyond, and see the truth

in all while recognizing that not all (in Christianity, or Hinduism either),

always see beyond parochial mentalities. It's a big world... and bashing any

religion just builds walls that will have to be pulled down.

Thanks for the many valuable postings on this list, there has been much to

inspire...

[sri Ramakrishna] RE: Darkness of Hinduism

Thanks Alan. I need to track the article first from where I took that

phrase. That article as I recall was a balanced article. I will first

track it and then the original source (perhaps from the author of that

article). I need more time for this. I accept that just as it is unfair to

castigate Hindus without evidence so also to others. Truth is what we are

after.

Regards

Milind

Dear Milind,

Interesting, but this is just third party reporting and gives no direct

quotations to support its tack, which makes me suspect the author cannot

support what he alleges and is just mouthing-off with high-octane emotion. I

think we need real 'chapter & verse' from a Vatican source, in which case I

will join you in condemning it.............

God bless,

Alan

You have a supporter in me for your thought. Every religion has its fanatics to

whom religion is just one more platform for creating discord.

I am a proud Hindu who believes that the best way for me to further the cause of

Hinduism is by retaining my religious individuality and at the same time

expanding to provide a meeting ground for all thoughts from Islam ,Christianity

or any other religion which point to that one God unperverted by the

proclamations of dogmatics and fanatics. If anybody thinks that there will ever

be a time when fanaticism will vanish.....well it is a good thought but it may

not happen.

To me my religion is all about quality and not numbers. One Sankara, One Sri

Ramakrishna, One Swami Vivekananada can negate the ugly efforts of countless

fanatics and Hinduism will be protected but provided all of us Hindus resolve to

lead our lives on the path demonstrated by our great Rishis, seers and masters.

By the way do Hindus complain when people in the West come on to seek solace on

the path of our great masters. Did I hear somebody talk against conversions ???

Strange but it is a world of double standards.

Regards and pranams

If i might be allowed to say " So well put " !

Only, if you had said the " best way to further the cause of 'Universalism'

rather than 'Hinduism' it would have been Perfect...

just a thought to a message that was so great...my tuppenny worth of an

opinion!

I often wonder that when we adopt stances like the one that MV Kamath has in

his 'musings', true though they are, it must only put people off who come to

Vedanta starry eyed, appreciating the universalism there. If they encounter

viewpoints that deprecates their origin, however, true it may be, it does

hurt them and they will distance themselves. There is good and bad in all,

as you mention, and even though Hindus are so passive, it is not the

passiveness per se that is bad, but not recognizing what is evil or what is

damaging. If we recognize and not retaliate, but grow the more from such

external deprecation we are the better for it...

If His Holiness The Sankaracharya of Kanchi is not received like the Pope,

then it is not the West's fault. The Dalai Lama is certainly received well.

It is because the His Holiness The Sankaracharya has chosen not to

communicate to the Western audience ...using western modes of communication.

When preachers go to China or India, they learn the language and ensure that

they get the message across....

Regards and Pranaams to you

ps

Ramakrishna said Hiss...but do not bite...

I often wonder though...this does not work when the one being hissed at

realizes that the hisser will never bite and therefore continues to " throw

stones "

Hissing only works when the one being hissed at remains in ignorance...

any thoughts?
