Guest guest
Nantha Waiting for the mind to settle to start meditating is like waiting for the waves to stop in the sea before deciding to take a dip. It will never happen. The nature of the lower mind which is most active in us ordinary aspirants is to be running restlessly most of the time. Meditation is just one of the many ways to control the mind. It is true that some basic preparation is necessary to start meditating but please do not wait to get rid of all desires before thinking of commencing meditation. The steps are as follows: - Cultivate a longing for God by spiritual Sadhanas that best appeal to you (Japa, Sankirtan, thinking of God and his glories, study of texts such as the Gita, Srimad Bhagavatam, Ramayana etc. etc.) - Become of a meditative mind which means that thoughts of God should start occupying more and more of your mind gradually - Do not worry about failures. Keep getting up every time you fail or fall in taking your attention from material to spiritual thoughts. Remember every time you fall and start again you have made progress. God is keeping your dairy. -Withe the above step your journey towards meditation has started - If sitting cross legged and contemplating about God or controlling your mind is your idea of meditation then you have misunderstood. Sadhana is a full time activity meaning it is a process of having the background music of God playing in your time more and more until it becomes a full time activity amidst all your other work. - As you start following the above steps you will find that your formal meditation when your sit cross legged and give your entire mind to God will become more and more effective and deep. When you reach this stage you will then see visible progress and will feel that you are on the path. Now you have arrived and unless you are careless it is a matter of time that you will reach your gpoal. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Japa is the simplest and best practice to keep the mind focused during meditation and activity. Conscious breathing is a great help too. Read something by Thich Nhat Hanh, such as " Peace Is In Every Step " to learn some techniques in mindfulness and breathing. These techniques can be combined with japa/mantra repetition. Then your whole day becomes a meditation!
