ASH AND OTHER MARKS USED ON FOREHEAD

Good day,

 

Please permit the questions below -

 

[1] Grey ashes are used to smear between the eyes on forehead,

on the throat and on the chest. Where do these ashes come from,

and why is this custom done please?

 

[2] the other marks on the forehead by Indian ladies here, come in many

different colors, also, they use shiny stickon round stickers. They

say also, men used to wear the red mark on forehead, but not

anymore. Can you please explain this custom? Why do men not

wear mark?
