Guest guest
Dear List: I am editing a manuscript in which the author states that the ancient Hindus believed that the first people were ants. She writes: <<Hindu holy writings teach that ants are divine, the “First Born” of the world.>> Can anyone verify this? I want to be sure this is accurate. The manuscript is a revised edition of a book called The Voice of the Infinite in the Small: Re-visioning the Human-Insect Connection, by Joanne Elizabeth Lauck. This is a wonderful book full of compassion for the insects who are so despised in our world. (The original edition is still available; the revised edition will be published in autumn 2002.) Thanks. Guest guest
Namaste, It seems a metaphor has been interpreted literally!!! Purusha-sukta of RigVeda, Brihadaranyaka and Chandogya Upanishads mention 'creation down to the ants coming out of the Self'. Gita says, 'from Brahma to the blade of grass'; it would not mean grass was the first creation!! The implication is that nothing exists which is not Brahman. If the author insists on retaining the statement, a full reference would be mandatory.
