Guest guest
Dear Friends, Greetings, Thanks to Sunder for an amazing site refrence. This site says - Ramakrishna had wanted that they take to monastic life and had symbolically given them Gerua cloth. They accordingly founded a monastery at Baranagar and began to live together, depending upon they got by begging. Sometimes they would also wander about like other monks. Naren also would sometimes go travelling. It was while he was thus travelling that he assumed the name of Swami Vivekananda. My Father says Vivekananda means (Sanskrit) " rejoicing in knowledge " , so can I say that this is what Swami Vivekananda intended when he gave himself the title and name " Swami Vivekananda " ? It is a wonderful name for a wonderful Person. Does anyone know how and why he chose this name and title for himself please? We are fourth generation here, so I don't know " Gerua cloth " exactly its meaning or what it is made from - can you help me please? Now I have enough material for a good presentation, thanks to you. Thanking you very much Avanija Surendran
Guest guest
Namaste, Swamiji changed his name several times between 1887, the year of his Sanyasa, and 1893, when he sailed for USA. It was in 1893 that he assumed the name of Vivekananda, at the suggestion of Maharaja of Khetri, his staunch aly for the mission. Gerua just means the color 'reddish-brown'; Sanyasins wear garments dyed in this color, also called saffron or orange by some. Regards, Sunder Ramakrishna, " Rajah " <rajah@x> wrote: > Dear Friends, > > Greetings, > how and why he chose this name and title for himself please? > > We are fourth generation here, so I don't know " Gerua cloth " exactly its meaning or what it is made from - can you help me please?
