The assumption behind the question is that God is a being separate from

ourselves who rewards our goodness by revealing Himself or giving us an

experience of His love for us. This assumption may need some close examination

to see whether it is really true or not.

Realized people tell us it is not God who withholds Himself from

manifestation--how could He, when He is the totality of all manifestation, as

well as beyond all existence?--but it is we who are unable to see Him because we

are placing an umbrella between ourselves and the Sun of Reality. Remove the

umbrella and the Sun is there. It has never gone--it is you who " go. " They say

the umbrella (your sense of separate identity) vanishes when you see that it is

false and unreal. Or perhaps it is like the mirage in the desert--as soon as you

recognize that there is no pool of water over there, you still see something

that looks like water, but you no longer go toward it for satisfaction.

I am convinced that there is nothing you can do to merit God's love, nor is

there anything you can do to lose it. Love itself is nothing other than your

inviolable unity with God, which is eternally self-existent and does not depend

on anyone or anything. It is for this Love that the universe has sprung into

existence.

If we find that concept to be the truth, it is up to us to follow it to its

inevitable conclusion.

Or we can forget the philosophy and just try to please Him, and see where

that leads us. Perhaps to the same place. Is there anywhere else to go?
