Guest guest
Thank you everyone for the tremendous help! Last silly question! We were looking at the pictures of Swami Vivekananda and were wondering if the costumes he wore were made to impress the Westerners, or were actually worn by Indians of his time? Thank you. Guest guest
Namaste, p.390, Vol. 1, The Life of Sw. Vivekananda, by his Eastern and Western Disciples, gives some background on this: " ....So when his [Alasinga Perumal] guru, accompanied by Jagmohanlal, reached Bombay from Khetri, Alasinga was at the station to meet them. Jagmohan,....had been instructed by the Raja of Khetri to make all necessary arrangements. He now took the Swami to the best shops in the city and bought all manner of things for him. When the Swami found costly silk materials and suitings being ordered for the robes and turbans that he would wear when lecturing in the West, he protested. A simple ochre robe would do, he said: but Jagmohan would hear nothingof the kind. The Swami found himself helpless in face of the well-meaning and devoted intentions of his disciples, and could only submit. The result was that he was fitted out in royal style, and presented with a handsome purse. A first-class ticket had been bought for him on the Japan-bound p. & .O steamer Peninsular, Jagmohan maintaining that the guru of a Raja should travel like a Raja..... " (Jagmohanlal was Private Secretary to Raja Ajit Singh of Khetri). Regards, Sunder Ramakrishna, " Rajah " <rajah@x> wrote: > Thank you everyone for the tremendous help! > Last silly question!
