Guest guest
Dear List I have been asked to do a little article for the religious education council to balance a very 'materialistic' article they have with an atheistic bias. The title is 'Natural World'. I am sending you a copy of my article to get your views. The article is meant for secondary school teachers (and not for the specialist) hence it may appear a bit too simplistic for the cognoscente - but see what you make of it.. Natural World Hinduism says that the natural world is manifestation of God and hence deserves reverence. Religion is defined as that discipline that allows one to see the world not as a mundane entity but as something wondrous and divine. This 'spiritualising' the world around us is called religious living in Hinduism. Another word for the cosmos is 'Srishti' which literally means 'projection' (of God). This may appear as pure poetry but very recently we find that Science is beginning to discover something very similar. This theory in science is called Quantum Mechanics and forms the basis of explaining everything from DNA to Computer technology. This single theory is considered (without any doubt) the most successful theory ever. In fact this single discovery of science is considered to be more important than all other previous discoveries put together. In a nutshell this theory says that this world is not 'as it appears'. There is much more at play than we had previously thought. The science of the previous centuries thought that the world is made up of little lumps of matter, which obediently follow some fixed rules and that forms the basis of the whole universe (including all living things). Such ideas have been permanently demolished by Quantum Mechanics. Suddenly the previously lifeless domain of science which was based on materialistic philosophies has been replaced with very exciting developments which echo spiritual teachings. Even the father of this theory Neils Bohr says: " If one studies quantum mechanics and does not get a shock then one has not understood Quantum Mechanics " . This theory suggests that somehow everything is instantaneously connected to everything else (even if it is a billion miles away) in the most unusual manner. (This is called Bells theorem). And somehow 'consciousness' plays an essential role in manufacturing the universe we see. The earlier materialistic theories had suggested that consciousness is just a by-product of the physical brain. Quantum Mechanics has turned this around completely and suggests that without 'consciousness' not even one little elementary particle like the electron can come into being! We live in exciting times, at the heart of science we suddenly discover not something lifeless and dead like a lump of matter but something that links itself to the whole of the cosmos; and to all life through consciousness! Hinduism defines God -as of the nature of Existence (Asti) and Consciousness (Bhati). When we dig deep to find out what this universe is all about (as science tries to do) we seem to find that we are staring right in the face of God! jay
Guest guest
Namaste Jay, Right on! You may want to add 'prIti' to asti and bhAti, to complete the triad of 'sat', 'chit', and 'Ananda', the source and essence of all Love.
