Guest guest
Vedic Verse > >By austerity, goodness is obtained. From goodness, understanding is >reached. From understanding, the Self is obtained, and he who obtains >the Self is freed from the cycle of birth and death. > >Krishna Yajur Veda, Maitreya Upanishads 4.3 This statement, if i may be permitted to say so, is succint, but seems unlcear to me personally and i would be grateful for further clarity Austerity leads to " Goodness " what does goodness mean? Someone could have austerity forced on him or her. Does that necessarily mean that he becomes good? Isn't it through understanding and a gradual process of cultivating Bhakti that " Goodness " ( Unselfishness ?) is obtained Grateful for any thoughts Pranaams _______________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com
Guest guest
Namaste, The original Sanskrit mantra reads as follows: tapasaa praapyate sattvam sattvaat saMpraapyate manaH manasaH praapyate hy aatmaa yam aaptvaa na nivartataa iti . Due to the limitations of translating into another language, it is hard to get the same 'nuance' for the critical words, such as tapas and sattvam. The Gita is a good resource to compare definitions for such words; e.g. for tapas, see 17 : 14,15,16; for sattva 14 : 6, and many others.
