The relation of cause and effect is one of evolution, the one becomes

the other, and so on. Sometimes the cause vanishes, as it were, and

in its place leaves the effect. If the soul is the cause of the body,

the soul, as it were, vanishes for the time being, and the body

remains; and when the body vanishes, the soul remains. This theory

fits the arguments of the Buddhists that were levelled against the

assumption of the dualism of body and soul, by denying the duality,

and showing that the substance and the qualities are one and the same

thing appearing in various forms.
