i dont know much about pooja vidhanam xcpt doing pooja with devotion. if as u suggest, all the upacharas are to be abridged in a single mantra like yaanikaani, the thrill of the pooja itself is lost. if for example a friend or a rspectful person comes to your hous, you would like to spnd as much of your time as possible with him mainly for your satisfaction rather than his. similarly, if god is invited let him be with us accepting all the shodhasopacharas leisurely instead of running through them and creating aayasam to him. that gives us thrill and more tim for the mi nd to be in tune with the PARAMESWARA This is the humble feeling of this inignificant person. you may agree or do not agree its your will and a rflction of your own dvotional aspct. sorry if i have erred in replying as foregoing..regards..kvs_vsp <kvs_vsp wrote:

Dear Sri Simhadri Rao garu,

You are absolutely right. Shradda and satisfaction (fulfilment) is more important in any activity, more so in Puja, than anything else. The Rishies did not do any puja, but kept their heart and soul in the tapas or meditation at the feet of the Lord. And Yajna Yagas that they have performed, it was for Loka-kalyanam rather than for any personal gain. And at times, they have performed some of the krathuvus for the prosperity of their kings and kingdoms. So, the first prerequisite in any activity is Shraddha. The more you are in, the better it is for the refinement of the mind, which is the source of all miseries.

Love and regards.

Dear Sir,

Sai Ram. I agree with you that God is being invited into the idol in front of us when we take up the Sagunopasana (Worship of the Deity with Form) and it should be done to our satisfaction. God is pleased with the simplest of devotion as confirmed by Him in Srimad Bhagavad Gita (Patram, Pushpam, Phalam Toyam....).

By the way, Yaanikaanicha Paapani is a mantra for doing Pradakshina and is not a substitute for the mantras of Shodasopachara Puja. Pradakshina means going in the right direction, i.e. to the right of the God when doing pradakshina in a temple and when doing in front of an idol, going in the righthand direction around us, since we consider the external idol as a symbol of the Deity whom we have installed in our own heart. Atma Pradakshina is the circumambulation (the english word doesn't have the beauty of the sanskrit word pradakshina but will do for now) around oneself. And the mantra is clear that we are surrendering to the God with a clear invocation that we are helpless in redeeming ourselves by our own efforts. This mantra has the beautiful effect of loosening our ego (which has the tricky habit of getting puffed up with pride at the successful completion of a good Puja) and thus allowing the divinity in us to blossom forth.

Sravanam, keertanam, (Vishnoh) smaranam, padasevanam, archanam, vandanam, dasyam, sakhyam, atmanivedanam are the nine types of bhakti that are prescribed to get God's grace. In doing a shodasopachara puja, we are able to carry out all the above if we do it with sincerity. We listen to the chanting of God's name, we sing His glory, we remember His kindness, we worship His feet, we worship His form, we bow to Him, we serve Him in several ways, we feel the friendship to Him and we surrender our ego to Him. If God is pleased with our devotion, He will visit us in the form of a Sadhu or Sant and will reveal His true glory to us.

If due to the time pressures of modern life, we are unable to do this type of Puja, let us atleast remember Him as often as possible in the day. In this Kali Yuga, God's name is the only sadhana that is easily possible to many of us. Sai Ram.

Thank you and the TeluguBhakti group for stimulating the above. Sai Ram.

Dear kvs,

There are only 16 main steps in a puja that is why we call our

traditional puja as " Shodasopacaa (16) pua) " . I identified the steps

from your previous email. The last one is " udvaasana "

not " khamaarpana " but ofcourse it is good to say sorry to GODs, but

our Ancient's stance in this regard is that " better be careful than

be sorry " . So if you do the 16 properly then no need to say sorry :)

Hi,

Just an observation.

In the list of Shodasopacharas,

" Sadya trivarti samyuktam " -- This is " Sajyam i.e.sa+ ajyyam " - " ajyam

is Ghee " .

" Deepam aghrapayami " should be " Deepam aghNApayami " .

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Dear Raghava Rao Garu and other Esteemed Devotees,

A few years ago, I have written, by His grace, a few

points on the " Significance of Puja " for my own

knowledge and use. But, having seen the correspondence

on that topic now in Telugu Bhati Pages, I thought it

prudent to share it with you all. Here is the

link. Kindly let me know if there are any

shortcomings, so that it can be further modified and

improved.

Yes your observation is right with regards to aajyam.

In the mantra:

saajyam trivarti samyuktam vahninaa yojitam mayaa |

gruhaaNam mamgalam deepam trilokya timiraapahaa ||

sa+aajyam = with ghee

trivrarti samyuktam = and three wicks

But Deepam is neither Aagraapayaami, nor aaghNApayaami. We normally

mistake this mantra because it follows " Dhoopam " -- Dhoopam

Aghrapayami (aaghraana = to smell)

The right gesture after Deepa is:

Deepam saMdarSayaami = I am showing the light -- (that is the very

same light which we lit in the beginning of the puja so this Deepam

is intricately connected to the first Deepa Prajvalana)

Love and Light,

Madhava
