This is in response to Rama nama japam. The purpose of any spiritual practice,

as it is the case with nama japam, is inner transformation. Removal of

tendencies accumulated over several births and in this one so that one sees the

" Truth " clearly. The Truth being the knowledge of the Self. The cause of all

suffering is due to selfishness and fear. Both arise due to the perception of

something that is different from our own Self. When a person sees the Oneness,

there is neither greed nor fear. It is our own misguided actions that make minds

dull and take us deeper into ignorance. Namajapam cleanses our hearts (chittasya

suddhaye karmah) and removes the desire to do actions that bind us. (The usual

word used for these actions is Paapam.) Rama, then, verily resides in the heart

of such person. God is not someone who keeps count on the number times his/her

name is chanted in order to grant protection.

Dear Sri Sastry garu,

Sai Ram. I certainly support your idea of chanting Rama Nama, though whether you

can take credit for the thousand names of Vishnu by chanting Rama Nama once is

debatable. That the particular Sloka continues to be in the Phala Sruthi of Sri

Vishnu Sahasra Nama Stotra indicates (to me) that both are needed. And for the

benefit of all Rama bhaktas, here is a more elaborate text of what Sri Siva told

Sri Paravathi:

Sri Rama Ramethi Rame Rame Mano Rame

Sahasra Nama Tat Tulyam Rama Nama Varaanane

Japathu Japathu Mantram Janma Saaphalya Mantram

Janana Marana Kheda Klesha Vichheda Mantram

Sakala Nigama Mantram Sarva Sastraika (Sastra + Eka) Mantram

Raghupathi Nija Mantram Rama Rameti Mantram

Nikhila Nigama Mantram Nitya Tatvakhya Mantram

Bhavatula Hara Mantram Bhumija Prana Mantram

Pavanuja Nutha Mantram Parvathi Stotra Mantram

Raghupathi Nija Mantram Pahi Mam Rama Mantram

There is probably some more but it escapes my memory now. I don't know the

source of the above but I used to hear the above from my beloved mother when I

was a child. Unfortunately I never asked her the full text and never noted down

the full mantra or its source. And unfortunately now it is too late since she is

not in this earth plane. However, through this I am praying to her and through

her to the Mother of all Mothers to give me or another group member here or

somewhere else, the full text of that beautiful hymn.

Sai Ram.

Any mantra helps us to cross the ocean of mind with all its storms of ego

generated desires and the pain that accompanies desire. And Sri Rama Mantra,

contains Ra, the Agni Beeja so it burns down all sins caused by Avidya, Maya and

thus gives Mukti.

Thanks for sharing. Sai Ram.

Hello, KAMA SASTRY,

Greetings of love and peace.

What you said is perfectly true. But this 108 times (one mala chanting ) is not

an ordinary chanting and I think it need to be done with deep meditation i.e. in

the alpha state of mind, and during and after that one should not have any doubt

or negate the efficacy. Because our every thought manifests, only the time

between thought and manifestation depends on the state of mind and amount of

energy gone in. Quite often we fear of responsibility that we have to take after

its manifestation and negate that thought. This does not mean that we have to

tom--tom- or drum and announce what our thought was and what was the result,

this will have another social repercussion. As in the external world we are to

be responsible for our every action, like wise in the internal world we have to

be responsible to our every thought. (this is action in inaction- mental action

in physical inaction. Lord Krishna says we have to enjoy the fruit)

I think I talked too much for your simple good suggestion.

With love and regards

I would like recall a Zen story in this context.

Once, a king approached the Zen monk. The king asked the remedy for his

troubles. Zen monk looked at his Sishya to give the king a remedy. Sishya

suggested a mantra to the king, the king left. The Zen monk inquired the Sishya

what remedy he had suggested. Sishya said “I told him to utter Om sri

manipadmahom three times to get rid of his troubles.” Zen monk shouted at him,”

Why three times, you should have told him chant it once!”

My Babai wanted to taste the sweetness of Ramanamam. He was on an errand to

Vijayawada. He chanted Sri Rama Rameti ….10000 times while commuting to make it

one crore. He felt the nectar sweetness of Ramanamam. He said that taste was so

unique and unforgettable. The tongue remained sweet for a long time as if he had

eaten many sweets. Mind you he is diabetic and resists sweets.

That’s the power of Sri Ramethi ….chanted with utmost faith.

It is believed that one who dies in Kasi attains Moksha. It is also believed

that Siva chants this mantra Sri Rama Ramethi.... in the ear of the dead. Hence

this mantra is undoubtedly powerful.

As mythology, Siva wanted to see Vishnu. Siva asked Parvathi to accompany him.

But Parvathi had a Niyama without chanting Vishnu Sahasra Nama she would not go

anywhere. Then Siva said utter Sree Rama Rameti … that is equal to 1000 times

uttering Rama Nama. Parvathi chanted Sree Rama Rameti.. once and accompanied

Siva.
