GOPURAM ARHITECTURE

I understand that the Gopuram top indicates whether the idol inside is

Siva or Vishnu by having Nandi's Horns or Garudas Wings on the top

ends. Is this correct ?

Also the number of kalashas above the gopuram indicates the stories of

the Gopuram. I may be wrong here as I see this not occuring in many

Gopurams.

Can any one enlighten?
