ASHTTA DIKPAALAKAS ( Rulers/masters/lords of eight directions )

 

1.East - Praak Disa (thoorpu dikku) - INDRA.

Indra was once known as Mahendra(great one). Mahendra gradually

became Indra and now almost a forgetten diety. Once upon a time

he ruled the roost and lorded over one and all. His consort is

Sachi Devi, a noble and very pious lady. But the same thing cannot

be said about Indra. He is pompous always hankering after power

and position. He is always suspicious of righteous people afraid

that they are trying to dethrone him. He is surrounded by luxury,

beautiful damsels, musicians and Vandi Maagadhs(flatterers.) He

will stoop to any level to preserve his position - infanticide of

children of Dithi (prachetasas), always ready to despatch his

courtesans to tempt Rishis and lead them astray. He is known for

nepotism-steals kavacha kundala of Daana KarNa to safeguard the

future of Arjuna. He does not think twice to kill holy Brahmins-

Viswaroopa, Vrithra ,Daddhichi etc. His weapon Vajra aayudham is

made from the Vertebral column of Brahmin Daddhichi who was put

to death to supply the powerful weapon for Indra who can now go

on rampage. At the same time he is a coward - when his life is at

risk he goes and hides in an inaccessible place. He descended to

such

a low level as to deceive Ahalya in the guise of her husband

Gauthama

Maharshi. He met his downfall when he underestimated the strenghth

of Lord Krishna who as a boy lifted Govardhan Parvath to protect

His

fellow cowherds from Indra's hail storm.Indra is URANUS , HERSCHEL.

Indra is the lord of clouds and is responsible for smooth change

from one season to another and especially for good timely rains

for good crops. He is a typical modern day politician who will not

stop at anything to remain in power.It is safe to be on the right

side of Indra.He is surrounded by Saptha(7) Rishis, Ashtta(8)

Vasus,

Ashtta(8)Dikpaalakas,Nava(9) Brahmas , Thrayodasa (13)courtiers,

Pancha Vimsathi(25)Apsarasa, Saptha Vimsathi(27)Gandharvas

(celestial

musicians) and is guided by Great Wise Guru BRIHASPATHI Son of

Angira.

 

2.South East - Aagneya Disa (agni dikku) - AGNI (fire=nippu).

There are 48 types of Agni ranging from mildest of mild welcome

warmth

on a wintry night to ferocious Kaandava Dahanam - wild Australian

bush

fres and California raging fires. Agni stands for Purity , Truth ,

Sanctity. Nithya Agni Hothram , an ever lasting fire of bygone

days

still presreved by our Brothern Zoroastrians in their Sacred Fire

Temples.

Agni is the medium of transportation for offerings(Havis) of

mortals to

Gods and in reverse direction to bring Divine Blessings to Earth -

Ishtti.

Agni is for tajnams , Yaagams , Homamas , Samskaras(rituals). Agni

is

for Suchi , Subhratha , Saucham and ill conceived practice Sathi.

Agni is to test Sitha Devi and Agni is for prayopavesam and for

burning

at stake by you know who.

 

3.South - YAMA - Pluto of Hades.DakshiNa Dikku.

Yama is the son of Soorya(Sun God) and brother of Saturn (Lord

Saneswara)

and brother of River Yamuna one of Three Holy Rivers. Yama is

Dharma raaja ,

the most impartial - King and pauper are`same for Him .He only

obeys Lord`

Shiva and no one else. He is ably assisted by His record keeper

Chithraguptha

(Charon) who keeps track of all mortals and helps in transporting

Jeevatmas

to their final destination after an impartial judgement. He is the

most kind

God and is not in a hurry as exemplified by His kind treatment of

Nachiketha,

Savithri and did not hesitate to carry out orders when

Markandeya's time came

but only yielded to the wishes of Lord Shiva. On YamaDwithiya

visits His

Sister's house with gifts, a loving Brother.

 

4.South West - NIRUTTHI - Nairuthi Dikku . Nirutth is Rudra.

 

5.West - Paschima= Padamara Dikku - VARUNA DEV - Neptune , Poseidon -

God of Rain , God of Oceans and

all waters. Friend of Mithra and commonly referred as MITHRAA

VARUNAS- they

fathered Agasthya and Vasishtta.Varun Dev of gentle brooks and

also of

floods and Tsunamis.

 

6.North West - Vaayu or Vaayavya Dikku - VAAYU DEV - God of Air

Like Agni Vaayu Dev also comes in many

forms mildest of mild MALAYA MANDA MAARUTHAM to Prachanda Gales,

Twisters

Tempests and Tornqados . Vaayu Deva gave us Lord Hanuma - Maaruthi.

 

7.North - Utthara Dikku - KUBERA - Yaksha Raaja , Brother of

RaavaNa Brahma ;

many times trillionaire , a benefactor of Balaji - Kubera is

a repository of all liquid cash in the world - IMF , WORLD BANK ,

Federal Reserve and allBanks in the world and all world currency

from weak taaka to mighty Dollar.

 

8.North East - Eesaanya Dikku - Lord Eesaana- Rudra. east and North

East are

Holy Directions or Dikkus for Rituals (Samskaaras) North East is

the Direction

of Kaasi.
