VOICE OF THE RISHIS – 32

UDYAME NAHI SIDDHYANTI

" Nothing is achieved without a dynamic effort " is the surest and

most pragmatic Vedic saying. This significant adage asking us to do

every effort (udyama) for the advance of our lives, clears away

certain illusions in the minds of some men, that Vedas, the most

ancient holy texts deal with mysticism or some obscure metaphysics

about the other world etc. Certainly not Vedas it should be known

are of this world, and for this world.

See how this exhortation that nothing can be achieved (nahi

siddhyanti) without any dynamic effort, enthusing men to be active

in their endeavour, relentlessly, so that one can achieve one's goal

goes.

" Nahi siddhyanti " nothing can be achieved is the negative aspect

stressed first. And the next counsel is " Udyame " resort to the

work, eschewing sloth, slumber and despair. This is saying

requiring men to be ever active with newer and newer projects on

hand. Without this there can be no fulfillment (nahi siddhy anti)

of our ideas.

What a positive, eternal, universal, sage advice contextual even to

the modern man, from an ancient Vedic Text.

Such of these ancient sayings should be well etched in our minds and

be meditated upon in our everyday lives, so that they may prove

meaningful and purposeful.
