PRIYA BHAGAVAT BANDUVULLARA!

RISHI VANI - 38

COURTESY: SHRI RAPARLA JANARADHANA RAO

KO ARUK?

-- Charaka Samhita

Charaka, the famous pioneering physician of Ayurveda on ancient

herbal medicine begins his " Charaka Samhita " with this fundamental

query " Who's there without a disease? " Maharshi Charaka asks this

question to mean that every human carries with him some disease or

other. He tells us by the rhetoric question that there is no one on

this earth who is free from disease.

Diseases are of various kinds and degrees. Some are seen outside

while some remain latent. Some are latent and some are manifest.

Some are violent and disturbing while others are tolerated and made

mild in nature by the defense mechanism of the body. And modern

science brings us the category of genetic diseases which are passed

on to the infant through their parents through the DNA imprints.

Maharshi Charaka by this wise inaugural saying in his " magnum

opus " , " Charaka Samhita " , exhorts people to rid themselves of

feelings of arrogance of being healthy and look down upon the sick.

He drives home the point that all men are with some diseases or the

other. " Vyadhigrasthe Kalebare " , the body (Kalebaram) carries some

disease (vyadhi) or other. Hence man must take care of his health

seeking all the ways to preserving health, which is of utmost

importance to him.
