VOICE OF THE RISHIS: 51

COURTESY SHRI RAPARLA JANARADHANA RAO

TYAGE NAIKE AMRUTATVA MAANASUHU

-YAJURVEDA NARAYANAM

" Man attains immortality only through sacrifice " . Several noble

qualities have been enumerated worthy to be acquired by man to make

his life successful. Honesty, industry, compassion, generosity,

bravery are some of the essential qualities that make man great.

But self-sacrifice or `Tyaga' is given the top list as an essential

characteristic to make a man immortal. The term immortal (Amritha)

or deathlessness carries a world of meaning as a synonym for a

glorious life to be remembered for ages. The lives of great saints

who led lives of devotion, shunning all comforts of material world

are considered great. By their personal sacrifice seeking truth

they became Amrita, deathless, unforgettable, or ever remembered.

Similar were the lives of the valiant soldiers who gave up their

lives in the battle for a noble cause, with utter disregard to their

lives. They fought bravely for a lofty cause and thus became

immortal.

While a self serving, self centered man is ranked the lowest among

the community, the self sacrificing attitude on the part of man

makes him remembered with love and regard for his noble quality,

which we call immortality. Innumerable names in mythology and

history can be mentioned as examples, but suffice it to say that

this adage says that man becomes immortal only when he transcends

the longings of the self by a sacrificial life.
