PRIYA BHAGAVAT BANDUVULLARA!

VOICE OF THE RISHIS: 55

COURTESY: SHRI RAPARLA JANARADHANA RAO

`DHIYOYONAH PRACHODAYAAT'

--YAJURVEDA MANTRAN, GAYATRI

" Let our minds be blossomed " is the important basic concept of Vedas

enshrined in the great mantra, Gayatri, ordained to be recited as

many number of times as possible. Gayatri mantra or the

invocational prayer to the Sun God forms part of the ancient Vedic

living. The sages of those considered Sun God (Surya, Aditya) as

of significance to men on earth denizens of the zodiac, in emphasis

that " This very sun is God " (Asaavaditya Brahma). " Aditya or the

Sun is Brahma, Lord itself " .

With this background of Sun worship in mind, let's understand the

meaning of the Greatest of all Mantras, Gayatri.

1. Om Bhoor Bhuva Ssuvaha

2. Om Tat saviturvanenyam

3. Bhargo Devasya Deemahi

4. Dhiyo Yonah Prachodayaat.

1. The Lord of the Three worlds, Bhoor, Bhuvah, Suvah

2. That glorious, adorable one

3. To His great Light, I offer my Prayers

4. Let our minds, thoughts be blossomed.

Let us confine to the last line of this mantra here. The

followers, the devotee of Sun God prays for the blossoming or

expansion (Prachodayaat) of the minds (Our thoughts) of the people.

Addressing the Sun the mantra, Prayer, consists a very significant

thought namely, " Let our thoughts expand " . Here the use of the

plural number " our " (naha) is to be noticed. The aspirant is

praying not for himself alone in singular person, but in a universal

way (of all of us). Secondly the Prayer is for the expansion of

thoughts. All human process is embedded in it. I stop here, for

words prove inadequate to describe the greatness of this Gayatri

Mantra.
