VOICE OF THE RISHIS: 87

COURTESY: SHRI RAPARLA JANARDHANA RAO

" VIPASSANA "

This single but significant word indicates the great practice

enunciated by the Buddha. The word " VIPASSANA " is a derivative from

the Sanskrit `Vipasya'. `Pasya means to see well or " to see

carefully " . The practice, Lord Buddha initiated to his

disciples " Vipassana " or `careful observation' deserves our careful

consideration. Of-course `careful seeing' we do understand, but

what? Note the answer deserves careful consideration given by the

Buddha, the one that relinquished his princely pleasure, and

penanced under the pipal (Bodhi) tree without food and water and

proved himself a true yogi, turned into the Budha.

" Observe carefully the movements of your breath " is the complete

saying. This practice of Vipassana, the simple Yogic practice is

still followed by the Buddhist monks in Burma and propagated world

over by a member of the great industrialist family Sri Satyanarayan

Goena. Several training centers are established all over the

world. The famous woman police officer Kiran Bedi introduced this

simple system of observing the movement of breathing or `conscious

breathing' as it is called in Tihar Jail, Delhi. The criminals, it

is said turned a new chapter in their lives.

Our breath, when observed carefully or watched runs through left

nostril (Ida) and right nostril (Pingala), and centrally

(Sushumna). The practice Vipassana ordains men simply to watch the

inhalation and exhalation consciously. Breath (Prana) is life and

watching the breath carefully leads to the understanding of one's

own life.
