Root Out Egoism, Attachment and Desire - Gita 15:3

God says in Gita 15:3 " Asvatthamenam Suviroodhamoolam " - Cut off the

firm and deep rooted Pipal tree.

Here He is referring to the branches of ego, attachment and desire.

Ego, attachment and desire, are so firmly rooted, that it is very

difficult to root out, even through one engages in the study of

scriptures, listening to divine discourses, contemplation and

inquiry. A spiritual aspirant while listening to these discourses

thinks about renouncing these evils, but in practical life, he finds

themselves unable to renounce these.

The reason that he is unable to renounce these, is because he wants

to renounce these evils but at the same time enjoy mundane pleasures

derived from people, objects and the world. Just like a greedy man

who wants to relish sweet dishes mixed with poison and at the same

time escape the effects of poison. But this is impossible.

When a spiritual aspirant has no desire at all to derive any kind of

pleasure from the world, the firm rooted tree of the Universe is

naturally rooted out.

Further more, a spiritual aspirant thinks it is very difficult to

get rid of these evils of egoism, attachment and desire. But the

fact is that these defects automatically vanish, they cannot stay,

as these are by nature transient. So a striver should never think

that it is diffcult to renounce them.
