VOICE OF THE RISHIS: 92

COURTESY: SHRI RAPARLA JANARADHANA RAO

" SAATVAMASI AMOOHAM, AMOOHA MASMI "

--VIVAHA MANTRA

At the Vedic style of marriage the bridegroom is asked to say these

words. It means " you do not commit mistake (You do not cheat me) and

I too do not cheat you " . This text centers round the moral duty of

both wife and husband. Fidelity as a great moral dictum is here

insisted upon. Of course this type of moral obligation to the other

partner of life is indicated in all other religions too.

In Vedic rituals both the husband and wife sitting together should

offer oblations to God. This type of life has made the families a

well-knit unit, continuing the Vedic heritage even to this day

though with a few adaptations, wrought by the flux of time.

Fidelity to the other partner of life is given top priority and the

present Vedic text reveals its importance. Marriage is not for

convenience or pleasure. True understanding of the Vedas, shows it

is a holy bond of two souls to bring forth children and help in the

continuity of the rich heritage.

Western world shows regard to us and for our Vedic ancestry, only

amazed at our well knot families. Though some breaches are made

into our lives by the passage of time and by the alien influences,

the sanctity of marriage still holds strong in our society, from the

least literate to the highly learned.
