UPADESA SAARAM OF RAMANA MAHARSHI – AN APPRECIATION (Verse 16)

Drisyavaaritam chittamaatmanah

Chitvadarsanam tatwadarsanam

Chittam:The mind

Drisyavaaritam : withdrawn from the `seen' (world of objects)

Atmanah chitvadarsanam : finds itself to be of the nature of `Chit' –

Pure Consciousness, the `Seer'.

Tatwadarsanam : This is the vision of the Reality.

The mind withdrawn from the `seen' world (of names and forms) sees

itself to be of the nature of Pure Consciousness; and that is the

revelation of the Reality or Self Realization.

Our mind is the architect of the world we perceive and we interact

with. The world is inside the mind. Generally our mind is extrovert.

When we see an object our mind plays about with the thoughts

associated with it. We never think of turning our attention to the

Seer of the object or on our self. In contemplation our attempt is

to shift the attention from the object and turn it towards the

Consciousness, which illumines the object by the thought.

The mind if withdrawn from the seen objects merges in the pure

nature of Consciousness. The abidance of the mind in its own nature

of Consciousness is the vision of Reality. The seeker who knows his

nature to be chit, at once comes to realize the Truth, which has

been described as Tatwa darshanam. According to the Gita (VIII. 12

onwards), when the mind withdraws from external objects of senses

and beholds its own effulgent form, that is true wisdom. (Main
