VOICE OF THE RISHIS: 106

COURTESY SHRI RAPARLA JANARADHANA RAO

" KSHEERAM JEEVANEEYANAAM "

--AYURVEDA

Ayurveda deals with health and longevity of man. Several tenets are

given for man to enable him lead a healthy, active, and fruitful

life for long years. Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Vagbhata

Ashantanga Hridayam, Dhanwantary Nighantu, are some of the many

standard books in Ayurveda.

Several physical procedures are suggested in it. As suited to the

changing climatic conditions several methods are enunciated.

Several items of food too, as dietary regulations are given.

Various herbs are identified and their propensities and properties

are defined and given in classified versions in the materia medica.

In Ayurveda a list of items of food is given termed as " Nitya

sevanee " " can be taken always " safely without disease. These are

nutritious food items which can be taken always without side

effects. Let us see what they are " wheat, barley, rice, green gram,

honey, milk, milk products and amalakee (goose berry, phyllanthus

embilica, commonly called as Usirika in Telugu) among herbs and

banana, snake gourd (potla) etc, among vegetables and green

vegetables (chakravarthi). " Ksheera bhojee sadaa-bhavet " – eat food

with milk " is ordained.

It is also ordained " Bhavet " always take food with milk. Lord

Krishna is said to have swelled milk products like butter, curds

(yoghurt), cheese ghee etc.

But it should be known and strictly followed that all these products

refer to cow's milk and not she buffalo milk.
