AATHREYA - KUNTHI , A Noble Lady

Kunthi Devi is the daughter of Soorasena , and an

younger sister of Vasudeva and hence Lord Krishna's

paternal aunt.. She is adopted by Kunthi Bhoja and so

she became Kunthi. Kunthi Bhoja and Kauravas are

well known to each other . So Bheeshma arranged an

alliance between Kunthi and his nephew Paandu Raaj.

Paandu's mother is Ambaalika . Paandu is born pale

as a result of congenital hypoplasia of red bone marrow

and low red blood cell count . Kunthi had 4 sons ; she

disowned her eldest son KarNa . Her sons are referred

to as Paandavas and Kauntheyas. Kunthi also brought

up two sons of her co-sister Maadri and they are known

as Maadreyas. Maadri committed Sathi when Paandu

died prematurely. KarNa prefered to be known as

Raadheya after his foster mother Raadha.

Except in the case of Karna , due to circumstances

beyond her control, Kunthi is a very good mother

and stood by them rain or shine. She accompanied them to

AraNya Vaasam in forests for 13 years. She was very good

to her co-sister's sons also. Kunthi is a very noble lady and

impartial regarding all 5 Paandavas , so much so she asked

all five of them to marry Draupadi. Kunthi's relations towards

her elders Gaandhari and Dhrutharaashtra are impeccable

and she is agreat devotee of Lord Krishna. Finally she is

magnanimous to accompany Gaandhaari and Dhrutharaashtra

to Vaanprastam instead of staying back in Hasthinapur when

her eldest son Yuddhishttara became dejure and defacto King.
