SRI MAATRE NAMAHA

JAIGURUDEVA DATTA

Bilhana Mahakavi belongs to Kashmir but he was settled in Karnataka

(South Inda) and he belongs to 11th century.A.D. Mahakavi Malhana is

also belongs to 11th cen. These two poets earned a good name in

poetry as

" Malhano bilhanscheti dwaveatow sarasaha kavee " .

Bilhana Mahakavi is a great devotee of Lord SIVA. He had not treated

any God equal to SIVA. Even though he was a devotee he blamed Lord Siva as and

when he felt bad since he considered Lord Siva was very close to him. But

actually there was no Ninda or blame. This style is called as NINDA STUTI. His

famous work was BILHANA STAVA. Let us taste his poetry and NINDA STUTI from his

Bilhana stava.

" Santu sahasram devaaha tadguna doshoktibhi kimasmaakam

SIVA meva varnayaamha punarapi SIVAMEVA SIVAMEVA

Let there may be thousands of GODS. We are not interested with their

good and bad qualities. We are decided to praise only Lord SIVA and

SIVA only

" Dhatte murdhni sudhaamayukha sakala slaagheye kapaala srajam

vakshasyadri sutaa kuchaagaru rajassandre chitaabhsmacha

tadbaanaadi kavipraneeta lalita stotra prabandha priye

twatkarne labhataamayam mama giraam kumbhopi sambhaavanaam "

Hey Lord! SIVA! You are wearing Chandra (chandra rekha) who is in a

habbit of showering lights associted with AMRUTA. In the same head

you are wearing bunch of skulls which indicates AMANGALA. Goddess

Lokamaata Parvati devi embraced you with the decoration of Kumkuma

(kesar) Agaru etc., on Her breast. Duly neglecting this very

memorable occation, you have decorated your chest with BHASMA of a

dead body.

Hence it is clear that you are in the habbit of doing meaning-

less work. So I request you to do one more meaningless work. You

have already heard great poetry from Bana Mahakavi etc; prasing you.

Now hear my poetry.

It appears as NINDA. But in the above sloka Bilhana praising

Lord SIVA is having SAMATWA. Samatwa (equality) in good and bad is a

good quality.

" Sasyaaropana rakshanaakshamatayaa bhikshatanam nirmitam

kachha grndhana mochanaalasatayaa vaaso disah kaliptaaha

saanaanveshana gharshanaavasatayaa bhsmaangaraagaha krutha

viswotpaadana rakshanaapaharanaa yaasaswtayaa nekshitaha "

Hey Lord! Siva! You are a lazy fellow. That is why you are not taking

pains to cultivate food grains and devoleped a habbit of begging

from house to house. You are not wearing any clothes with the fear of

folding, keeping it fit to wear so as it may appear to be nice after

dressing. Insted of this you are moving as DIGAMBARA (naked). You

are not interested to take strain to prepare sandalwood paste for

your body application. Insted of this you have devoleped the habbit of dusting

ashes of corpus on your whole body. But I wonder about

your one action. Duly neglecting your lazyness, you are taking so

much pains in creation of the universe, maintaining it's administration and also

smashing it in PRALAYA.

In this NINDA STUTI sloka, Bilhana praises Lord Siva as the whole and

sole administrator of the universe. Lord SIVA may easily do the small

work like cultivation, dressing properly and preparation of sandal

paste etc. Those are very simple works. But HE is not doing those.

It means that HE is a VIRAAGI and not at all having interest in any

type of luxury materials. This is UDAATTA BHAAVANA.

MAY LORD SAAMBA SIVA SHOWER HIS BLESSINGS ON ALL OF US
