Seeing Inaction in Action - Gita 4:18

" He, who sees inaction in action and action in inaction, is wise

among men, he is a Yogi and performs all his duties. " (Gita 4:18)

" Karmanyakarma yah pasyedakarmani ca karma yah

sa buddhimaanmanusyes sa yuktah krtsnakarmakrt. " (Gita 4:18)

So long as a spiritual aspirant has affinity for the body and the

world, till then the both performance or non-performance of actions,

will be included in action. Therefore, a Karma Yogi should remain

detached (untainted) in both states, while performing actions, as

well as, while not performing them.

Remaining untainted while performing actions means that, no such

desires must arise in him. He must not think that " By doing this, I

will receive this fruit, I will profit, I will gain honor, I will

receive praise, I will attain spiritual power, people will think

well of me, I will gain pleasure here or hereafter etc. "

Similarly remaining untainted during the non performance of action

means, he should not feel that by giving up, by sacrificing this

activity he will gain honor, praise, pleasures, and bodily rest etc.

There should not be the least bit of desire of this sort.

He who abandons action, because it is painful or out of fear from

physical suffering, he reliquishes passion (rajasa tyaag), while he

who renounces his obligatory duty out of delusion, indolence and

heedlessness, relinquishes inertia (Tamas tyaag). Both kinds of

relinquishments, must be totally abandoned.

Non performance of action, to enjoy a meditative state or experience

the joy of liberation, in reality is not getting detached from

nature (prakriti). It is only when when one renounces full affinity

with nature, that one remains untainted while performing or not

performing actions.
