AATHREYA aarbeekay - PANCHAANGAM VIII

NAKSHATHRAM - Star of A Particular Day

Kshathram = one that is not stationary and keeps moving.

Nakshathram = one that does not move and is stationary.

Assuming wrongly that our Universe is Geocentric an area

of Sky surrounding our Earth like a broad belt along which

pati all our Planets are moving from east to west is known

as Zodiac aka Ecliptic aka Kundali aka Bha Chakram. It is

represented by 12 Raasis (Constellations0 of 360 degrees,

each raasi comprising of 30 degrees.

Each Nakshathram occupies 13.20 degrees of a Raasi.

Each Nakshathram has Four Paadas (CharaNams) = quadrants.

Each Paada of a Nakshathram occupies 3.20 degrees.

Each Raasi accomodates Nine Paadas of successive Nakshathrams.

Nine multiplied with 3.20 equals 30 degrees of a Raasi.

There are 27 Nakshathrams. 27 multiplied with 13.20 equals 360

degrees of Kundali (Zodiac)

Please note each degree is subdivided into 60 segments;

please bear this in mind while multiplying, dividing etc.

Next to Thitthi the most important component of Panchaangam is

Nakshathram which every one of us should know.

Just like Thitthi, again it is Chandra (Moon) who decides waht

any particular day's Nakshathram is.

The Day's Nakshathram is that one which is occupied or traversed

by Moon on that particular Day.

Similarly the Day's Raasi is also named after that Raasi occupied by Moon.

Moon approximately stays in one Raasi for about 2 and 1/2 days

and about one Nakshathram in one day anywhere between

22 1/2 hours and 26 1/2 hours.

In 29 Days plus Moon traverses along 108 Padas of 27 Nakshathras of

30 Raasis of Zodiac.

A Raasi is suffixed with five characteristics as follows:

1. --- SankramaNam = exact time of entry of Sun into a particular Raasi.

2. --- Aayanam = time of sojourn of Sun in a particular Raasi = 30 days

3. --- Raasi = time of sojourn of moon in a particular Raasi = 2 1/2 days

4. --- Yogam = sojourn of Moon and Sun together in a particular Raasi

5. --- Lagnam = 12 consecutive lagnams each of 2 hours duration

starting with Mesha Lagnam if Sun is in Mesha at the time of Sun Rise. Lagnam is

aka Ascendent.
