Guest guest
Dear Devotees in TBP, Love and Love alone... I like a lot the below reproduced sloaks of Sri Adi Sankaracharya. The whole vedanta and vairgya is carefully preserved in these five slokas. The slokas are very simple to understand and contemplate. However, I am giving a small commentary at the end of these slokas just for my satisfaction. Love and Love alone.... P. Gopi Krishna ====== 1. Aashaya baddhate loke, karmane bahu chintaya Aayuh ksheenam najanati, tasmat jagrata, jagrata. 2. Kama krodhascha lobhascha, dehe tishtanthi taskarah Jnana ratnapa haaraya, tasmat jagrata, jagrata. 3. Sampadah swapna sandeshah, youvanam kusumopamam Vidyut chanchalam aayushyam, tasmat jagrata jagrata. 4. Mata naasti pita naasti, naasti bandhuh sahadarah artho naasti graham naasti, tasmat jagrata, jagrata. 5 Janma dukham, jara dukham, jayadukham punah punah Samsara sagaram dukham, tasmaj Jagrata, Jagrata. Love and Love alone.... Desires resulting in thoughts to act in several ways are binding us to this world, but we are so deluted that we forgot that in this rat race, our age is decreasing. So becarefu, be careful. The known, but at the same time, unknown enemies of any human are kama, krodha, lobha, moha, mada, matsarya, ahamkara, etc. The moment they appear, jnanam just flys away from the system. We need to have control over them to lead a life of a Real Human Being. So, be careful. Health and wealth like dreams, wither away like flowers at the sight of scorching Sun. Day-by-da, we are nearing to the last days of this body. We have to be careful, so that we will not waste this life. When death strikes, no other person or assets (like name and fame or power or wealth or any mundane aspect) goes with us. We have to go alone. So, be careful. Life is full of miseries, old age is painful, having a lot of perperty or money is full of sorrow, in fact anything that is available in this world give us only pain or dukham. Therefore, be careful. Guest v.narayanan
The story behind these couplets is that a Chandala( who was always into Bhagwan Naama) is reborn and becomes a nightwatchman in a village. However his Past makes him chant these verses in the Night which says "awaken awaken". People get restless in their nights sleep . They go and complain to the King and he summons the watchman. The king listens to the verses with deep meaning , is moved and offers the watchman a big post in his Rajya. The watchman refuses as that would run contrary to his sayings. The king compels saying that only by sharing such vast knowledge among people, he can serve the society. Reluctantly the watchman asks for the post of a JAILOR in the Jail where there are death facing Convicts. King is surprised but relents to his request. While in the Jail, the watchman continues to chant these verses. The convicts dont understand anything and avoid him. But he being a good artist, draws beautiful paintings of the Lord and his leela on the walls of the prison at nights. Slowly the convicts start enjoying the paintings. One by one, they get restless and inquisitive about them and at last one convict asks " Why he went on chanting these verses every night". The Watchman said why are you asking after so many days? The convict said that the paintings on the walls have been stirring his mind and hence he needed to know more. The Watchman said" continue to think for few more days and I shall tell you. Slowly in these days 2-3-4- and all the 28 convicts in the prison started coming and asking for the meaning. The Watchman asked " are you all worried" They said ofcourse. We will be hanged on the dates notified. The Watchman said you are all lucky. Atleast you know the date of your moksha. The people outside the prison are daily dying without even a notice. The convicts said does that mean we are better off having committed crime? The watchman said" If you have realised you have committed crime and decide not to repeat" you are already FREE and not in bondage like the people outside the prison. Realisation is more important. The convicts were thrilled and happy. One day, the king came on rounds to the prison and was surprised to see all convicts so contended and peaceful. King was surprised and asked Watchman what magic did he do. The Watchman said " I did no magic. I only told them the TRUTH. It was for them to take and realise it. They did it. This is the essence of Sanatana Dharma- Satyam Vada and let the world take it as it wants. ( as told by Shri Velukkudi Krishnanji)
