AATHREYA aarbeekay - PANCHAANGAM X I

SOORYA MAANAM and CHAANDRA MAANAM

Bharath Varsh is replete with any Number of Eras (Sakam) :

Yuddhishttara Sakam , Vikramaarka Sakam , Bauddha Sakam ,

Saalivaahana Sakam , Kushaan Sakam etc.

New Year beginning is based variously either on Sun , or Moon

or Jupiter entering a Raasi ; they are known as

1. Sooryamaana New Year, 2. Chaandramaana New Year , and

3. Baarhaspathyamaana new Year, which just began on 22 Nov. 2007

when Jupiter entered Dhanush Raasi where He is going to stay

for one year.

But the most important we have to remember are as follows :

a. Lord Krishnaavathaara Anno Domini 5,229 th year

b. 28 th Kali Yugam , Pratthama paadam 5,108 th year ,

Vaivaswatha Manvantharam.(during the reighn of 7th Manu,

Vaivaswatha)

Just like week days and months repeat so do the Names of Years -

cycle of 60 years . Name of the Current Year is SARVAJITTH , 21st of 60 yrs

All the above are based on Two Basic Systems of Panchaangam.

1.Soorya Maanam and 2. Chaandra Maanam

As their names suggest the two Maanams are based on Position and

Movement of Sun and Moon respectively.

1. Soorya Maanam is based on the movement of Sun from one Raasi

to another Raasi. Entry of Sun into a Raasi is known as

SankramaNam or Sankraanthi . There are 12 Raasis and so are

12 SankramaNams. Mesha SankramaNam is the beginning

of Soorya Maana New Year .

Makara SankramaNam (January) is the beginning of UttharaayaNam

(6mos).

Karkaataka SankramaNam (July) is the beginning of DakshinaayaNam

(6mos)

Sun sojourns in a Raasi for 3o days and is known as Meshaayanam

etc and the name of the month also is same as Mesha Maasam etc

Sun entered Vruschika Raasi (Scorpio) on 16 Nov. 2007 , so that

Day was Vruschika SankramaNam .

Sun is now in Vruschika Rasi , so this is Vruschika Maasam

Sun is sojourning in Vruschika Raasi , so it is Vruschikaayanam.

2. Chaandra Maanam is based on the movement and status of Moon in

relation to Sun . The months are known as Chaandra Maasams.

Chaandramaasams are of two varieties -

A. In some parts of Bhaarath Chaandramaasam begins on first

day after

Full Moon and ends with next Full Moon - This variety is called

PaurNamaantha Chaandra maasam.that month which ends with

PaurNami or Full Moon.

B. Second Variety of Chaandra Maasam is known as Amavaasyaantha

Chaandra Maasam , that month which starts on the first day

after

New Moon and ends with next New Moon (Amaavaasya).

The name of current Chaandra Maana Month is Kaartheeka Maasam as

the star on Full moon Day , 24 Nov.2007 is Krutthika

Nakshathram, since the

Nakshathram on Full Moon Day bestows its name upon Chaandramaana

Month.

Last month Asweeyujam , Aswini Nakshathram was the star of Full

Moon Day.

Next month Maargasira maasam , Mrugasira Nakshathram will be the

star on Full Moon Day.

Chaandramaana New Year UGAADI will come in Chaithra Maasam when

Chithra Nakshathram will be the star on Full Moon day.

Two months is one Ruthu (Season) Six Months is one Aayanam.

Om Thath Sath
