Guest guest
EFFECTIVENESS OF SILENCE – A SHORT STORY: One of the Buddha's disciples once asked him several metaphysical questions – the nature of creation, the existence of God, and the post-nirvana state. The Buddha declined to give answers just then but promised to do so after one year. But during this period the disciple was to observe complete unbroken silence and simply to watch his thoughts as they pass through his mind. The disciple spent one silent year just watching his thoughts. At first his mind was like a humming beehive assailed by a multitude of diverse thoughts. Gradually these began to subside and by year-end, the humming bees had vanished and he was freed from the tyranny of thought processes. A year later when the Buddha asked him to put forward his questions, the disciple told the Master that he had no questions as his mind was completely at peace.
