Guest guest
What is the difference between Rochaka Bodha and Bhayanaka Bodha? An erudite soul inquired with affection to me to explain Rochaka and Bhayanaka Bodha that was described as part of the explanation of Sravana, Manana, Nidhi , Dhyasa process of gaining knowledge. To know in short Rochaka is teaching in a sweet and interesting way to the disciple. Bhayanaka as it is self explanatory is to teach about the object in a way that the sadhaka gets fear of doing those things and hence prevented from wrong deeds. Let me try to illustrate in such a way all our atma bandhu will be able to grasp easily. Once upon a time in a town named Srinagaram, there lived a family. In which Mothers name is Sri Mata and the small, innocent child’s name is Sadhaka. This kid sadhaka fell ill and mother called for the famous doctor named “Guru”. This doctor, over his years of experience and as he is well versed with these kind of diseases could immediately understand the problem of the child and knew what the suitable medicine is. But this is a Bitter medicine and the Guru knows the child will vomit it the very moment he takes it in. As the doctor is intelligent, he wrapped the medicine in Sugar coat and made the child to consume. As the child didn’t feel any bitterness, he could happily swallow the whole medicine and in few days he recovered and played happily to the mother’s satisfaction. In this way Doctor fulfilled his job and pleased the mother(Sri Mata) and helped Sadhaka to become healthy(knowledgeable). To summarize Rochaka Bodha is like this Sugar coated medicine. As years rolled on Sadhaka became middle aged and with the problems of age he got symptoms of diabetics. This time Doctor knows the sadhak should not be given sugar coated medicines. Doctor recommended Bitter Gourd juice to sadhaka. It worked and Sadhak became fit to continue the journey. Bhayanaka bodha is like this Bitter Gourd. In these examples the Doctor is the Bhava roga vaidya , Guru. Based on the symptoms and receptivity he knows what kind of medicine is more suitable. Such is the capability of Guru Dev and the sadhaka who follows Guru’s instructions will undoubtedly gain the knowledge of the supreme, non dual self. How to gain knowledge… As we were discussing on the Ananda Amrita Dhara series on how to approach god, ref. Tadviddhi Pranipatena pariprasnena sevaya Upadeshyantite Jnanam, Jnanina Statva darsina…. Approaching the Guru in a humble, bhakti bhava , with humility and inquisitive approach one should learn the knowledge. Importance of Guru on this path is paramount, which is intended to be covered in the Jai Gurudev series. After seeking the rescue at the lotus feet of the god a spiritual practitioner has to undergo the Sravana, Manana, Nidhi, Dhyasa phases of gaining knowledge. Sravana: Should here the preaching of the guru. An adept Guru who is an expert(ralized) will be instantly gauging the progress of the disciple and take him to the higer levels. In this process, as my Gurudev explained there are two kinds of bodha “Rochaka and Bhayanaka” based on the characteristic receptivity of the disciple Guru will teach accordingly. Disciple has to listen carefully and wait patently at Guru’s feet to grasp what guru will be teaching. Manana: This is like processing the ingredients of knowledge. Analyzing the Bodha of what was heard and debating within(or with other co-disciples) the content of the lecture and how to make best use and practice in his/her own path Nidhi: This step mentions that the disciple should preserve (memorize) the knowledge in such a way (S)he will be making use of it in the situations that best suit. It indicates that it is not just enough to listen and debate but also to remember for ever. This will be possible only when the student has utmost keenness of learning and high degree of Gurubhakti. Dhyasa: Fourth and important step of the process says whatever the disciple has heard from guru, analyzed and preserved in the layers of brain that he make as the object of meditation and meditate on the Dhyeyakara ..(Dhyasa) These steps if followed with devotion and dedication, no doubt the sadhaka will acquire the knowledge and will be able to reach the higher levels of practice. Don’t they seem to be relevant even in the materialistic life of learning? Jai Gurudev satguruh ______________________________\ ____ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Mobile.
