He indeed knows the true nature of the Supreme Lord with a discus in His hand

and with infinite prowess, who adores and worships (Chanting the Divine Name)

the fragrance of the lotus-feet of the Lord again and again incessantly through

guileless devotion.

Though the Lord is highly incomprehensible to even a highly learned scholar, he

is easily known by a devotee. That devotee who constantly beholds the Lord’s

lotus-feet in his heart and is lost in its divine fragrance through his

guileless and incessant devotion very easily knows the Lord’s nature and

activities. The Lord reveals Himself to this devotee through his grace pleased

by his devotion.

Only through surrender of our ego to the Lord’s supreme-will, can one know the

ways of God which are inscrutable.

Sri Swamiji sings in one of His songs “கணà¯à®£à®©à¯

“Remain steadfast in the feet of Lord Krishnaâ€. “There is no use letting

the mind waver and disturbing oneself with lot of questionsâ€, He says.

The import of this verse is that one should submit oneself completely to the

Lord when even his own identity is lost in serving the Lord’s lotus-feet. Only

in such a blemish less heart does the Lord reveal Himself. This devotion must be

free from blemish like hypocrisy which is in the form of expecting selfish

rewards. That is implied by the word ‘अमायया’.

Thought for the Day

One may ask, if God is controlling everything, what is the need for

human effort? Yes, God is all powerful. But at the same time human

effort is also necessary, for without it man cannot enjoy the benefit

of God's grace. It is only when you have both Divine grace and human

endeavour that you can experience bliss, just as you can enjoy the

breeze of a fan only when you have both a fan and electric power to

operate it. (translated into Indonesian by Udayo Untarya Wijaya)

Pujya Ramsukhdasji Maharaj

Wed Jun 4, 2008 11:33 pm (PDT)

In the Self there is no doership or enjoyership in the least bit -

" naivam cinchitkaroti sah, " (Gita 4:20), " naiva cinchitkaromeeti "

(Gita 5:8). Whatever actions have been performed in the 8.4 million

forms of life, none of them can reach the Self, because the department

of Self is totally different from the department of action. So long as

a spiritual aspirant performs actions for himself, his sense of

doership (egois) persists, because without a sense of doership,

performance of an action for one's own self cannot be proven.

Therefore those spiritual disciplines which are practices for one's

own salvation, continues to keep the ego safeguarded as-is. Whatever

actions are done with egoistic notion cannot ever lead to one's

upliftment and salvation, because egoism is the root cause of bondage

(cycle of birth and death). Therefore a spiritual aspirant should not

give importance to activity, and instead give importance to the Self.

The body's relationship is with the world, and the Self's relationship

is with Supreme Consciousness (God). The body is a part of Nature,

whereas the Self is a part of Supreme Consciousness. Rather, it is not

possible for the Self to be ever established in the body. But man out

of his ignorance, assumes himself to be established in the body. In

this there is a vital fact that a man inspite of assuming himself to

be established in the Self, does in fact not become a doer or enjoyer

- " sharirasthopi kaunteya ne karoti ne lipyate. " (Gita 13:31). It

proves that the realization of the Self as not being a doer or enjoyer

is not attainable through any spiritual practices, rather it is a

natural state. Therefore a spiritual aspirant is not to try to wipe

out doership and enjoyership, rather he is not to accept it at all in

the Self; because in reality, they are not in him. In Gita, God has

explained the abscence of enjoyership by giving the illustration of

ether and the abscene of doership by giving the illustration of the sun

" As the all pervading ether due to it's subtleness, cannot be tainted,

so the Self (Soul, Atma), being omnipresent and permeating everywhere,

is not tainted by the body. " (Gita 13:32)

" Yatha sarvagatam saukshmyaadaakaasha m nopalipyate

sarvatraavasthito dehe tathaatmaa nopalipyate. " (Gita 13:32).

Divinity (existence) cannot rest in the body or in Nature (prakriti).

It is all pervading like ether - " nitya sarvagatah " (gita 2:24). It

pervades all bodies, within and without. That all pervading divinity

alone is our nature.

That which appears to be favorable to the mind and senses is deemed as happiness

and that which appears to be unfavorable to the mind and senses is deemed as

unhappiness. This is the definition and explanation of happiness and unhappiness

that is commonly understood among most people.

We think that by getting food, clothing, house, car, property, land, knowledge,

medicines and other things cheaply and in abundance we will become happy. But

think through this more deeply - those that have these aforesaid things in great

abundance, are they truly happy ? Not in the least bit, because with the

increase of material abundance, their longing for it grows, and this longing for

material things is the root cause of unhappiness.

In the Bhagavad Gita, when Arjun asked God about the root cause of sin leading

to sorrow and unhappiness, God responded that it is " desire " (craving, longing)

which is the main reason why one commits sins. The real reason for unhappiness

is only desire (craving, longing). Wherever you see people who are unhappy

whether it be in prison, in hell, on anywhere, if you investigate the reason

they are in their current state, you will conclude that either they had some

desire and craving for something in the past or in the present they are longing

for something that they do not have. By desiring, one does not attain things.

Even the world does not give to those who desire, rather they want to give

forcefully, willingly and gladly to those who do not want anything.

In this world, if a person gets everything to his liking and as his mind

desires, then too, he will not be satisfied. Rather his longing for more will

continue to increase " jimi pratilaabh lob adhikaayi " . The reason for increased

craving is that he is experiencing something lacking within himself, and as long

as there lies this feeling within of some void, something missing, till that

time how can there ever be happiness? Rather there will only be increasing

unhappiness.

If you think about this deeply, then you will realize that happiness is not due

to acquiring things, rather by attaining anyone or anything, the unhappiness

resulting from craving or longing for more, further increases.

Some Thoughts That Changes Life

Anger is a condition in which the tongue works faster than the mind.

You can't change the past,

But you can ruin the present by worrying over the future!

Love...and you shall be loved.

God always gives His best to those

Who leave the choice with Him.

All people smile in the same language.

Everyone needs to be loved...

Especially when they do not deserve it.

The real measure of a man's wealth

Is what he has invested in eternity.

Laughter is God's sunshine.

Everyone has beauty

But not everyone sees it.

It's important for parents to live

The same things they teach.

Thank God for what you have,

TRUST GOD for what you need.

If you fill your heart with regrets of yesterday

And the worries of tomorrow,

You have no today to be thankful for.

Man looks at outward appearance

But the God looks within.

The choice you make today

Will usually affect tomorrow.

Take time to laugh, for it is

The music of the soul.

Patience is the ability to idle your motor

When you feel like stripping your gears.

Love is strengthened by working

Through conflicts together.

Harsh words break no bones

But they do break hearts.

To get out of a difficulty,

One usually must go through it.

We take for granted the things that

We should be giving thanks for.

Love is the only thing that can be

Divided without being diminished.

Happiness is enhanced by others

But does not depend upon others.

For every minute you are angry with someone,

You lose 60 seconds of happiness that you can never get back.

Do what you can, for who you can,

With what you have,

And where you are.

LOOK FOR THE LESSON

Sometimes in the pain & adversity of our trials

we consume ourselves with one thought,

Of how in the world we can escape from it

and the heartache the trial has brought.

But perhaps a better way to focus ourselves

would be to look for the lessons it contains.

For the lessons God sends us are most surely there

woven into the fibers of pain.

How else do we learn compassion for others

if not through our own severed hearts.

For brokenness is a gift the Father will bless

to prove He is doing His part.

No time of affliction is ever gone to waste

if we learn from the comfort God gives.

And when we share that comfort...

grace & power is seen

and God gets glory in the life that we live.

Those times of desperation when we

fall down before Him and

beseech Him with our own desperate cries,

Somehow and some way make us

notice desperate people because

we see them through experienced eyes.

Heartache and adversity teach us and

mold us for they are the

" textbook " God tenderly chooses,

To reveal priceless lessons of wisdom

and compassion

to the children He blesses and uses.

Siva Kesava Mahathyam

Posted by: " Dr BGY Sastry " sastrybgy   sastrybgy

Wed Jun 4, 2008 11:33 pm (PDT)

Dear friends and devotees,

Bhakti is eternal.

Lords Siva and Vishnu are one.

All most all our Puranas reveal that there is no difference in between Siva and

Vishnu.

There are two mahaa-phala daayaka Vrukshas. One by the name Vaasudeva and the

other by the name Vaamadeva. They differ only in their sumas (flowers) (su is

replaced by ma in their names), but both give the same phalas (fruits) which is

moksham(Liberation) . It is also often said, How much one does not see the

difference between Siva and Vishnu that much his aayu (Life) will increase.

One day, when Lakshmi and Vishnu were together in vihaaram, Lakshmi sees

Ucchaishravam, her brother, the horse of Revanta who is the son of Surya.

Engrossed in seeing her brother, she does not reply to the repeated calls of

Vishnu. Seeing her attraction, Vishnu gives her shaapam (Curse) to go to

Bhulokam(Earth Planet) in the form of a horse and come back to Vaikuntam only

after getting a son equal to Him! She comes to Bhuloka to experience the shaapam

and realizing that none other than her brother, Siva can help her from the curse

of Vishnu, she immediately does a tapas for Him and Siva appears to save her.

Lakshmi says O brother Paramaatma! You and Vishnu are one and the same, Please

help me! Siva says O sister! How do you know that we both are same? All learned

people know that. Who told you? Lakshmi says, Once Mahavishnu Himself told me

this. Seeing Him in deep Daiva-dhyaanam, I asked Him During Samudramanthanam, I

thought you were the greatest of all

and hence chose you. Devaadideva! Who is better than you that you are in

dhyaanam of Him? Mahavishnu replied I am doing Sankara-dhyaanam. He is Eswara.

He is the same as Me. All learned people know that. If someone is my devotee but

still hates Siva, he will fall into naraka (Hell).

Saying this, She asks Siva to persuade Vishnu to bless Her with a child. Siva

sends Chitrarupa as a duta to convince Vishnu. Vishnu immediately accepts and

comes to Bhuloka and blesses Lakshmi with Ekaveera, who is equal to Vishnu

Himself. From Ekaveera came forth the Haihaya dynasty, of which the most noted

king is Kartavirya Arjuna (Ekaveeras grandson).

Once when Naarada, the avatar of Vishnu, recited prayers glorifying Lord Siva as

the supreme controller of the universe, Lord Siva, the best of Vaishnavas, at

once covered his ears and angrily replied, I am not the Lord of the universe,

nor an object of Krishnas mercy! I am just a poor aatma always hankering for the

favor of the servants of His servants. (Thus Narada, avatar of Vishnu, glorifies

Siva as the Paramaatma and Siva glorifies Vishnu as the Paramaatma!)

The story of Hanuman, who is the 11th avatar of Siva and Raama, the purna avatar

of Vishnu also reveals the same. Both of them acheived great tasks:

Restricting the great samudram, Raama along with His entire army crossed the

same, while Hanuman, in one small jump, crossed it!

In the greatest, unparalleled ghora-yuddham, which was never seen before or will

ever be seen, Raama killed Raavana! Hanuman killed Mairaavana, who was many

times stronger than Raavana, with great ease!

Krishna lifted Govardhana giri, balanced on his little finger and saved the

lives of Gopaalas! Hanuman brought the Sanjeevani Parvatam from Himaalayas to

Lanka and saved Lakshmana!

Raama melted a stone, with the touch of His lotus feet, for Ahalya! Hanuman

melted a stone with His sweet Gandharva gaanam!

Though they did great tasks like this, always Hanuman worshipped Raama, with

great Vinayam. And Raama worshipped Siva with unparalleled devotion. (If one

closely observes, for Paramaatma these tasks are not at all difficult/big. For

He does everything right from Shrushti to Layam. And He only resides in everyone

and gives life. However, since we cannot even imagine His power, we praise Him

for these small tasks only)

Impressed by the great tapas of Vishnu for Paramasiva, Siva gave Vishnu the

Sudarshana Cakram.

Annamaacharya, the great Vaak-geya-kaaraka of Andhra Pradesh, in one of his

divya sankeertana Enta maatramuna evvaru talichina Â…. says:

How much ever one imagines that much only are You:

For Vaishnavas You are Vishnu

For Vedanta You are Para Brahma

For Shaivas and other bhaktas You are Siva

For Kaapaalikas You are Kaala-Bhairava

For Saakteyaas You are Sakti

For people with alpa-buddhi You appear as alpam

For people who know Your Garima and have Ghana-buddhi, You are a Ghana

For people who are Sharanaagati You are Venkateshvara

Once Shri Krishna, the avatar of Mahaavishnu, came to Upamanyu maharshi, when he

was at Himalayas. Shri Krishna said Upamanyu muniindra! You are the greatest in

the Siva Bhaktas. I came here to do Tapas of Paramasiva to get santaanam. Please

teach Me Saiva-vidhi and vidhaanam.

Upamanyu replied O Shri Krishna! I know who You are. Siva puja is not new to

You. Though You know it, to make everybody know, I will tell You Â… Saying thus,

Upamanyu told Shri Krishna how to do Siva-aaraadhana.

This happened after the episode of Narada, coming under Vishnu Maya, gives

shaapam (Curse) to Vishnu: (This is one of the reasons of Shri Raama avatar)

Narada says Swami! Please forgive Me. I, coming under influence of Your Maya,

got ahankaar and did Your ninda. Please tell Me what can save Me from this

ghora-paapam . Vishnu says:

O Priya Narada! You go and do paaraayana of Sankara Satanaamams. Then You will

get Saanti. Siva is whom I respect the most. Even by mistake do not forget this.

One who does not have Siva-anugraham cannot be My Bhakta. Believe this Â… Then

My maaya wont affect you.

Once Vyasa Bhagavan came under the influence of Siva-Maya and started telling in

his Pravachana that Vishnu is greater than Siva. Once Nandeesvara also heard

Vyasa Bhagavan saying this. Vishnu Murty then appeared before Veda Vyasa and

told Him O Maharshi! Dont you know that I and Siva are the same? Knowing this

why are you telling like this in your Pravachana? Veda Vyasa then had great

paschaattaapam and asked Kshama from Nandeesvara.

The phalam of Vishnu Puja is Siva Bhakti the example is that of Arjuna. Arjuna

of course was the greatest of Shri Krishna Bhakta. But it was Siva who gave

Arjuna moksham, when Arjuna was born as Bhakta Kannappa, in the great Kaalahasti

Kshetram.

Similarly the phalam of Siva Puja is Shri Raama Bhakti the examples are stories

of Kaaka Bhushundi and Valmiki Maharshi. Kaaka Bhushundi was a great Siva Bhakta

and hence Siva grants him Raama Bhakti Saamraajyam. Valmiki did tapas for Siva

using the Panchaakshari mantram given to him by the great Saptarshis and as a

result became the Aadi Kavi and wrote the great Ramayana.

Raasaleela. It was the day when the punya-vruksham of Gopikas delivered its ripe

fruits, called Moksham. It was the day when the Aaraadhana of Gopikas was

blessed by Lord Krishna. Gopikas realised Shri Krishna, the Sarvaantaryaami,

everywhere. As a result of their Aaraadhana-bhakti they realised the paramaatmas

poorna-svaroopam with each one of them. Who could miss watching the Raasaleela,

where the Lord showered His Karuna-jyotsna? All the Brahma-aadi devatas were

present.

Parama Siva, the greatest bhakta of Shri Krishna, was also present in the form

of a Gopika. Shri Krishna, who is always in nirantara-siva- dhyaanam, searched

for Parameshvara. Finally He realized that Siva is none other than one of the

Gopikas having sampoorna aanandam of dancing with Him. Shri Krishna paramaatma

then does stuti of Esvara and asks to bless them by staying there at

Brindaavanam by the name of Gopeesvara.

Even today we can visit Lord Siva, in the form of Gopeesvara, at Brindaavanam.

Siva and Vishnu are the same.

Om! Vishnu roopaya namassivaaya.

With love and regards,

Sastry.

- A Story with Moral - Worth Reading -

There was this Sadhu who saw a scorpion floundering around in the

water. He decided to save it by stretching out his finger, but the

scorpion stung him. The man still tried to get the scorpion out of the

water, but the scorpion stung him again.

Another man nearby told him to stop saving the scorpion that kept

stinging him.

But the Sadhu said: " It is the nature of the scorpion to sting. It is

my nature to love. Why should I give up my nature to love just because

it is the nature of the scorpion to sting? "

Do not give up loving.

Do not give up your goodness.

Even if people around you sting.

Dear Members

" Hindu Dharma " is a book published by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan which contains

English translation of two volumes of the Tamil Book " Deivatthin Kural " ; which

is a collection of invaluable and engrossing speeches of Sri Sri Sri

Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi MahaSwamiji.

http://kamakoti. org/hindudharma/ part5/chap17. htm

Not in Other Religions

The concept of yajna or sacrifice is not present in other systems of worship.

There is a big difference between our religion, the " Vedic mata " , and other

faiths. Religions like Christianity and Islam speak of one God. The Vedas too

proclaim that there is but one God and that even an ordinary mortal is to be

identified with him. This Paramatman, this Godhead, is to be realised as an

experience by constant inquiry conducted with our inner being. It needs much

wisdom and maturity to attain this state. When we unite with this one and only

Reality, all those world disappears for us.

How do we prepare ourselves for such a state? The answer is: now itself, when we

are deeply involved in worldly affairs. In the very midst of our mundane

existence we must live according to the dictates of dharma and the teachings of

the sastras. In this way our consciousness will be purified. We will become

mature within and will be severed from the world. The duties and rites that will

take us to this goal are enshrined in the Vedas. The most important of the rites

is yajna. There is a very old Tamil word for it - " velvi " . In yajna, offerings

are made to different deities instead of to the one and only Paramatman. This

sacrament is unique to our religion.

In a yajna we are enjoined to offer various materials in the sacred fire with

the recitation of mantras. Making such offerings in the sacrificial fire is

called " homa " . Though the materials are placed in the fire it does not mean that

they are necessarily offered to Agni. Only such materials as are placed in the

fire with the chanting of mantras invoking Agni himself are meant for that

deity. But the oblations meant for other deities like Rudra, Vishnu, Indra,

Varuna, Matarisvan(Vayu) , and so on are also made in the holy fire. Agni

conveys them to the deities invoked. Just as letters addressed to various people

are put in the same letter-box, the oblations meant for various deities are

conveyed through one devata, Agni.

An important difference between the Vedic religion and other faiths is this:

while followers of other religions worship one God we worship many deities and

make offerings to them in the sacrificial fire.

We often say, don't we, that the Lord is pleased if we keep helping one another?

Reformists forsake puja and ritual, saying, " Serving people, serving the poor,

is as good as serving God " . We will receive the Paramatman's blessings if we

serve the devas also through sacrifices, for they too are His creation.

The Vedas proclaim that the one Brahman, call it the Truth or Reality, is

manifested as so many different devatas or deities. Since each devata is

extolled as the Paramatman we know for certain that monotheism is a Vedic tenet.

It is wrong to believe that the Vedas to polytheism merely because

they speak of many deities. In doing so they mean that the one and only Brahman

is revealed as many deities. It is for the conduct of the affairs of the cosmos

that the Paramatman has created the various divine powers. These (divinities)

dieties are also in charge of the forces of nature, the feelings and urges of

man. The Supreme Godhead has created them in the same way as he has created us.

He fashioned us out of himself - which means that he is that came to be so many

human beings also.

This is the reason why non-dualism proclaims that the Paramatman and the

jivatman (the individual self) are one and the same. In the same way, it is he

who is manifested as the many deities. However, until we are mature enough to

recognise the truth of non-dualism and realise it within, and until we reach the

state in which we realise that we are not separate from the Paramatman, we have

to perform rituals and help one another. In the same way the deities are also to

be looked upon as separate entities and are to be worshipped through sacrifices.

This is the law of the Vedas.

If we and all other creatures are to be happy in this world, we must have the

blessings of the deities who govern the cosmic forces. It is for this purpose,

to propitiate and please them for their grace, that the Vedas impose on us the

duty of performing sacrifices.

If we attain jnana, the wisdom to realise within the oneness of all, there will

be no need for these deities. We may worship the Paramatman directly. However,

so long as we make efforts to find release from this pluralistic cosmos, we have

to worship the deities as separate entities.
