It perfectly describes our state of mind... A young lady and her little son were swimming in the surf. She was holding her little son tightly by the hand and they were splashing around happily, when a huge wave loomed up ahead of them. As they watched in horror, this tidal wave rose higher and higher and crashed over them. When the water receded, the little boy was nowhere to be found. Panic-stricken, the mother searched in the water, crying and screaming. The child was lost, washed out to the sea. The distraught mother lifted her eyes to heaven and prayed, " Oh, merciful Lord, please take pity on me and return my beautiful child. I promise I will be grateful to you. I will never cheat anybody. I will be kind to all. I will do anything, only grant me this one favor and return my son, please! " Just then, another wave loomed up and crashed over her head. When the water receded, there was her little son standing in front of her. She clasped him tightly to her bosom and kissed him. Then she looked at him for a moment and once again turned her eyes heavenward. Looking up, she said, " ...But he had a hat, oh God! " Moral of the Story.... Friends, this is our mind! The son is back but the hat is lost. Although her little son is ok and safe, now she is unhappy because his hat is lost ... Again complaining! This goes on happening inside our mind. Whatsoever life gives to us, we are not thankful for it. We keep on complaining about the hat. We always go on seeing that which has not happened, not grateful for that which has already happened. We always look and desire and expect, but are never grateful. We always remain grumpy, complaining and are always in a state of frustration. We create a hell wherever we are! One desire is fulfilled; ten desires arise out of it. There is never an end to it. Friends, by desiring no one has ever attained to the state of peace. If only one can drop desires, there will be no frustration in life, nothing can make us unhappy. Then happiness will be natural.... In all the circumstances one can remain happy.
