A Satakam in Telugu language is usually a set of one hundred wisdom

poems written in various genres. Sumati Satakam occupies a very

honourable position in Telugu culture and language. It is the most

famous Satakam of Telugu.

The Sumati Satakam is reputedly composed by His Excellency Bhadra

Bhupala, popularly called Baddena of the 13th century AD. He was a

Chola prince and was a student deciple of reputed poet Tikkana

Somayaji, one of the authors of Mahabharata in Telugu.

Sumati Satakam is one of the earliest Telugu literary works

translated into European languages. Sir Charles Peter Brown, the

then civil servant in Andhra Pradesh rendered Sumati into English

sometime in 1840s.All through the centuries, this Satakam has been

extremely popular with parents and teachers trying to teach the

right conduct and social values to young children. These poems have

the musical quality of classical metres that can easily be taken to

heart for recitation.

The fact that even after 700 years, majority of the poems are

refreshingly relavant to modern times speaks volumes about the

composition. It contains the essence of Ramayana and Mahabhaarata

in a nutshell in between the lines of this Satakam for one's

personality development and excellence paving path for peace and

bliss.

I request you to listen to Sumati Satakam and teach to your

children and grand children.
