Sankara Bhagavatpada is a great piller of the spiritual cultures of

the world and his interpretation of Hinduism forms the philosophical

background of the religious thought of Hindu wisdom.

Adi Sankara's Atmabodha or Self Knowledge is a prakarana text composed

to serve the needs of those who have been purified and desirous of

kaivalyam or mukti or Liberation.

Atma or Atman, generally called as Soul of Self is the

deathless, birthless and eternal. It is a pure Spirit and is uneffected

by time and space which is unchanging 'Reality' behind the changing

body, sense organs, mind and ego. The unchanging 'Reality' in the

individual is calleld 'Atman' and the unchanging 'Reality' in the

universe is called Brahman.

The Atmabodha presents jnana yoga or the enquiry method, leading

systematically to Self knowledge.

The listeners will find in it all phases of man's progressive thought

begining with dualism, passing through the intermediary stage of

qualified non-dualism and ending in Absolute Non dualism in which one

experiences the total identity of the soul and Godhead beyond which

human thinking cannot go till today.
